University Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministries

Portland, OR Summary Description: The University Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministries is a full-time, benefit eligible position that reports to the Vice President of Student Success and Engagement.

This role will collaborate with faculty, staff, and students across the University to support the spiritual and intellectual growth of the entire campus community.

It is a community that is diverse in age, race/ethnicity, and religious background yet one that coheres around the person and work of Jesus.

This position is responsible for shaping and leading the university and community in forward-thinking, justice-focused, spiritually grounded thought and practice.

They will be a senior leader in the Division of Student Affairs who provides direction, vision, and oversight to chapel and other campus ministries programs.

The University Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministries will report to the Vice President for Student Success and Engagement with the opportunity for significant input at the strategic, university-wide level.

Salary range: $55,000
– $65,000.

 
Primary Job Duties:

  • Lead across the university in developing a spiritual grounding that is manifested socially and in the wider community.
  • Provide pastoral care to students by being available, intentional, and proactive with the spiritual development and needs of students.
  • Direct the university’s chapel program to include coordination of chapel calendar, contacting and selecting speakers from diverse backgrounds, overseeing worship, and communicating the chapel program to campus and external community members. 
  • Serve as a regular preacher/teacher in the chapel program.
  • Teach at least one course a year as part of the University core and/or Ministry and Community Engagement programs
  • Develop faith programs and design co-curricular faith integration (such as small groups, faith community partnerships, and Student Life initiatives) that intentionally serve students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Foster the development of co-curricular programming that will assist students in the integration of faith with their respective academic disciplines.
  • Participate in classroom activities as requested by or in partnership with faculty and engage in other University and community events to build community and connections.
  • Partner with Student Life areas to nurture visibility of campus ministries work.
  • Coordinate hosting of out of town chapel speakers.
  • Recruit, supervise, and mentor Campus Ministries students, student government staff (i.e., ASWPU Student Chaplain), chapel worship leaders, and small group coordinators.
  • Speak in area churches and represent WPU in ministerial community roles.
  • Be responsive to social issues on campus and globally.
  • Implement church database to assist students and the university with church involvement and significant connections.
  • Nurture and continue to cultivate relationships between the University and the vibrant faith communities in the Portland metro area and regionally, promoting and supporting connections between education, spiritual formation, and contributing to thriving communities and the repair of the world.
  • A faculty appointment and up to 25% teaching load is possible depending on qualifications

 
General Expectations

  • Supervise departmental budgets.
  • Participate in and contribute to regular Student Life staff meetings and all-Student Life events each semester.
  • Demonstrate presence and availability for student leaders and students you serve on campus.
  • Create timely, consistent, responsive, and effective communication to students, faculty, and staff concerning the activities and events in your area.
  • Practice regular collaboration with faculty, staff, and students across program areas on both the Mt.

    Tabor and Centre 205 campuses.

  • Be present in the office on a daily basis unless arrangements are made with direct supervisor.
  • Contribute to the support and implementation of the University Strategic Plan.
  • Participate in Warner Pacific University professional development opportunities.
  • Adhere to University policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate commitment to a Christian liberal arts education by upholding the mission of the University and abiding by the Employment Standards and Lifestyle Agreement.
  • Exhibit commitment to inclusiveness and sensitivity in areas of national origin, ethnicity, culture, gender, and disabilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Religion, Social Sciences, or related field.
  • Ministry experience, preferably on a college campus or with college students from diverse backgrounds.
  • The successful candidate will exhibit their ability to reach and serve all of our students by sharing their spiritual and academic strengths.
  • Experience working with, and providing services to, students from diverse backgrounds, ethnic minorities, and religious communities within a multicultural setting. 
  • Excellence in oral and written communication, public presentations and customer service.
  • Proficient in computer programs including Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel and Digital Media tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of people and commitment to diversity.
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently and effectively solve problems and initiate and implement projects independently.
  • Ability to multitask with accuracy in order to adapt and work effectively in a fast-paced environment with deadlines.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD or Master’s degree preferred with minimum of four years of experience in a higher education or multicultural ministry environment.
  • Spanish language proficiency.
  • Demonstrated technological skills such as experience with Microsoft Office Suite and the willingness and ability to learn additional tech-related tools such as Microsoft Teams, CRM software, social media tools (such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Hootsuite), Smartsheet, and the Campus’ Information System (Colleague).

Physical Demands – Work Environment:  
The position is located in a typical office environment.

Professional/business casual attire is required.
