General Purpose of Job

As an Underwriting Director (non-management) you will provide subject matter expertise on underwriting assignments and projects.

They are responsible for underwriting life insurance applications within their designated approval limit of up to $20,000,000 to age 85.

They evaluate and assess complex risks to determine whether to accept an insurance application and determine the appropriate coverage/risk.

This position will adhere to medical, non-medical, and financial guidelines while determining an individual’s insurability.

Duties and Responsibilities

Designs and leads effective presentations for customers and distribution partners.

Determines whether to accept, modify, or decline a risk through evaluation of an individual’s medical history or physical condition, occupational hazard, and financial background.

Directs and enhances organizational initiatives by positively influencing and supporting change management and/or departmental/enterprise initiatives within assigned area(s) of responsibility.

Enhances departmental outcomes by sharing knowledge with team members and providing advice on complex underwriting determinations.

Evaluates and underwrites life insurance applications making determinations of the terms, coverage, and rating classification within their designated approval limit of $20,000,000 to age 85.

Identifies and directs the implementation of process improvements that significantly improve quality across the team, department and/or business unit for their assigned area(s) of responsibility.

Identifies trends/issues and offers solutions on complex issues, including appeals and exceptions to meet customer needs while ensuring alignment to business strategies.

Leads project teams.

Maintains knowledge on current and emerging developments/trends for assigned area(s) of responsibility, assesses the impact, and collaborates with senior management to incorporate new trends and developments in current and future solutions.

Mentors underwriting team members and serves as a subject matter expert in one or more financial and/or medical topics related to underwriting and risk assessment; conducts trainings and/or prepares written documentation in field of expertise.

Negotiates sensitive, high-impact underwriting decisions with key distribution partners.

Provides direction on complex assignments, projects, and/or initiatives to build and enhance the capability of their assigned area(s) of responsibility.

Provides second signature reviews for any level underwriter for all amounts up to and including their maximum designated approval limit of $20,000,000.

Provides subject matter expertise to team members and applicable internal/external stakeholders on complex assignments/projects for their assigned area(s) of responsibility.

Represents the company at industry and customer meetings.

Takes ownership of highly complex case load to proactively communicate with customer and other departments to enhance relationships and facilitate placement of highly visible business.

4 Year/Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience (4 years of experience in lieu of Bachelor’s)

Work from Home : Employees will work fully from home.
