The Opportunity

As part of VMware, this role will help establish VMware as a security leader by owning the Security Story that we tell to the world.

To build this security story, the Product Marketing leader will lead the team that: 

  • Builds and delivers sales plays. 
  • Enables our sales team and channel partners on the market and our story.
  • Evangelizes VMware security globally. 
  • Establishes VMware security as a leader with industry analysts, especially Gartner. 
  • Influences CISO’s to believe in VMware as a security provider and buy our products. 

Job Description and Responsibilities

The Senior Director, Product Marketing will lead a team of approximately thirty product marketing, technical marketing, and market intelligence professionals responsible for driving sales results through coordinated product marketing and technical marketing activities including ownership of product messaging and positioning, product launches, market evangelism, thought leadership, analyst relations, competitive intelligence and the enablement strategy and materials for sales, sales engineers and partners.

This person and will work closely with the central marketing team to drive demand generation activities and with the sales team to optimize revenue.

The role requires an individual who is action oriented, with strong leadership, communication, partnering and analytical skills who can lead and grow a high performing team; create and articulate a shared vision for VMware’s security direction; and drive our overall go-to-market strategy. 

The ideal candidate possesses a unique blend of business and technical savvy; a big-picture, see-around-the-bend vision; and the drive, influencing skills and ability to collaborate with a large number of constituencies to transform that vision into a reality, and should have deep experience in cyber security.

More specifically, the role requires an individual with proven experience to: 

  • Recruit, motivate, mentor, coach, develop and retain a high performing team of product marketing, technical marketing and business development professionals.
  • Help create, evangelize and amplify a transformative vision for VMware Security’s product direction. 
  • Influence analysts, media, partners and customers with our thought leadership and drive product sales. 
  • Engage with VMware field and channel partners to create strong go-to-market motion. 
  • Drive thoughtful marketing plans, campaigns and budgets that are comprehensive in nature and cover the vision/thought leadership, training, analyst interactions as well as industry events. 
  • Build collateral, tools and train the sales and partner teams to enable the sales motion. 
  • Partner with our ecosystem to create win-win opportunities. 
  • Understand customer problems and find innovative solutions for the broader market. 

Business Leadership 

  • A team player and leader, who works effectively in a team-based organization, collaborates cross-functionally and across other business units, building support and alignment around goals and objectives for SBU and VMware. 
  • Define the Objectives and Key Results for the business performance (revenue, market share, number of customers etc.).

    Track business performance, identify levers for improving, and champion necessary initiatives to attain key results and objectives. 

  • Develop the sales and channel strategy for specific products and solutions.

    Analyze the sales cycle and channel mix and formulate ideas and approaches to optimize the selling process including creating and iterating on sales plays.

  • Identify and new market opportunities for VMware in security.

    Champion strategic initiatives organically and with our partner ecosystem to capture new market opportunities.

  • Drive understanding of market size and potential, and customer buying behavior through cultivation of a customer-centric culture and recurring market sensing. 
  • Collaborate with cross functional and cross business unit executive teams to assure alignment of Product Marketing functions with all areas of the business.
  • Lead by positive example, consistently demonstrate our EPIC2 values.

Product and Thought Leadership 

  • Distill market trends and customer requirements into a compelling vision for VMware’s role in security. 
  • Lead the development of appropriate positioning and messaging for different level audiences (end user, IT Manager, CXO) and for different target segments.

    Lead the creation of the whole spectrum of sales tools and collateral (PowerPoint presentations, datasheets, white papers, customer case studies, demos, webinars and training materials) to communicate the value proposition of VMware’s products and solutions to customers and partners 

  • Define the overall product and technical marketing strategy.

    Work closely with corporate marketing to determine and execute lead generation, analyst relations, and public relations programs.

    Project-manage product launches

  • Assure that VMware contributes meaningfully to the industry conversation about security in on-premise and multi-cloud environments.

    Set the agenda for the public debate in a way that showcases VMware’s advantage 

  • Lead an evangelist team for the Security Business Unit that is the front line for press, industry analysts, security events and customers 

Education  

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or related technical degree or experience.

    MBA preferred.
