The Strategy and Planning team enables leaders across Advisor Services to explore & set strategy, prioritize our investments, understand the perspective of our clients and tell our strategic story along the way.

Within the Strategy and Planning team, the Strategic Planning & Consultation team helps to shape both the long and short term strategic direction of Advisor Services and provides strategic consultation services on some of the most complex and time-sensitive strategic opportunities for the business.

As Senior Manager of Business Strategy, you will champion the needs of independent advisors and their clients and will shape the future of Advisor Services by framing strategic questions, informing long-term strategic decisions and enabling leaders and partners to prioritize and activate on critical business initiatives.

In addition to the opportunity to do high-impact, intellectually stimulating work, this role offers tremendous exposure to Advisor Services senior leadership and to what is going on across the business, including partner organizations like Digital Services, Technology, Operations, Marketing, Finance and Corporate Strategy.

Therefore, the ideal candidate will possess exceptional strategy, planning and interpersonal skills, and will thrive in an environment of ambiguity and rapid change.

What you are good at

Contribute to the Advisor Services strategy articulation and definition of priorities for the business by:

  • Supporting the development and evolution of Advisor Services’ 3-5Y Strategy and Annual Operating Plan
  • Helping to execute and oversee a new end-to-end strategic planning process
  • Representing Advisor Services in the Charles Schwab Long Term Corporate Strategic Planning process
  • Maintaining an understanding of strategic trends influencing Advisor Services and its clients
  • Driving productive leadership debate around key challenges/opportunities for the business
  • Developing and delivering compelling presentations to share the business’ strategic priorities with varied audiences, from division employees to regulators to executives across Schwab
  • Ensuring alignment of Advisor Services and partner organization strategic roadmaps

Drive the allocation of scarce resources to the highest value business opportunities by:

  • Managing the project funding intake & prioritization process for Advisor Services
  • Partnering with the Corporate Project Management Office, Integration Management Office and Finance to create greater transparency and accountability around investment in Advisor Services
  • Conducting preliminary impact analyses, as needed, around top funding opportunities
  • Making creative recommendations about how to optimize the impact of funding across all channels
  • Driving strategic alignment between Advisor Services and partner organization funding requests

Accelerate progress on select executive initiatives in need of short-term strategy support by:

  • Developing, gaining consensus around and executing Strategic Consultation project plans
  • Working closely with leaders, partners and subject matter experts to understand and structure ambiguous problems
  • Synthesizing complex information into clear takeaways and actionable recommendations through qualitative and quantitative analysis
  • Constructing effective PowerPoint presentations, write-ups and executive-level talking points

What you have

  • 4-6 years of work experience, preferably in financial services, consulting or internal strategy
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA preferred, but not required
  • Preference for hiring employees in Lone Tree, CO or Westlake, TX, however highly qualified candidates in other US locations are encouraged to apply
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently to consistently generate results in a highly ambiguous, matrixed environment
  • Strong sense of purpose & empathy that allows you to see “through clients’ eyes”
  • Unwavering integrity, strong judgement and ability to safeguard highly confidential information
  • Ability to distill large volumes of information down to key takeaways and actionable strategic recommendations
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including ability to develop and deliver effective, polished PowerPoint presentations for a diverse set of audiences (e.g., C-suite, frontline employees, regulators, etc.)
  • Intellectual curiosity & ability to formulate great questions that lead to deeper insights and a better understanding of potential risks
  • Engaging presence with the ability to serve as a thought partner for executives, colleagues, etc.
  • Strong analytical skills, including a high degree of comfort using Excel to analyze and draw insights from robust data sets (decision modeling & scenario planning skills are not required, but are a plus)
  • Entrepreneurial mindset (you’re a self-starter who demonstrates resilience and creativity in overcoming obstacles)
  • Track record of cultivating & leveraging strong relationships to make things happen
  • Exceptional time management & organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail, sense of ownership & pride in your work
  • A sense of humor, team ethic, and positive attitude
