Job Description

 

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Senior Director of Decarbonization & Sustainability will lead the development and implementation of Decarbonization and sustainability initiatives for Health & Hospitals (H+H) that result in measurable cost savings and progress toward environmental sustainability goals, including reduced energy and water consumption and decarbonization. The person will set the strategic direction for the Decarbonization and Sustainability Groups and oversee both policy, planning, and program development activities and technical project delivery to manage the environmental impacts of H+H’s portfolio.

General tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Leadership of the Decarbonization and Sustainability Groups: Lead overall efforts to improve Decarbonization management and sustainability at H+H. Drive forward best practices at H+H related to Decarbonization – and water-related operations and capital projects, energy and water data management, energy procurement and renewable energy use, overall decarbonization, and materials management. Establish a system-wide Sustainability council of H+H facility-based representatives to identify further opportunities to drive progress.
  • Sustainability planning and program development: Carry out complex assignments requiring comprehensive knowledge of energy and water efficiency and sustainability practices. Direct efforts to use sustainable products, processes, and technologies, and help identify, evaluate, implement, and verify new technologies. Identify and prioritize initiatives based on evaluation of life cycle costs, energy and emissions reduction benefits, and other factors. Maintain a library of industry research and provide internal reports on sustainability trends.
  • Support for integrated capital planning and oversight of technical project delivery: Provide input on Decarbonization and sustainability considerations for new construction and other capital projects across all lines of business. Ensure implementation of life cycle cost evaluation approaches that explicitly include such considerations. Lead processes to identify and deliver energy and water conservation measures. Ensure that technical projects are properly implemented, validated, and measured.
  • Optimization of facility performance throughout life cycle: Develop and optimize operating and maintenance processes to enhance the performance of mechanical, electrical, and building envelope systems systemwide. Provide expertise related to the establishment of standard operating procedures and predictive maintenance procedures, as well as the development and review of performance criteria for outside service contracts.
  • Provision of technical expertise: Provide oversight and direction in conducting LEED gap analyses. Serve as a subject matter expert to assist with LEED-EB, LEED-NC, LEED-CI and LEED-CS certification. Develop objectives, scope narratives and financial summaries (including payback analysis) in support of LEED certification. Establish operational policies and procedures related to fit-out, leasing, and design that support LEED principles.
  • Performance tracking and reporting: Manage regular energy and sustainability program and project reporting, including monitoring and reporting on energy use, emission reductions, project implementation, material management, and budget expenditures. Communicate past, present, and future energy plans and performance to H+H leadership, H+H teams, H+H facilities, and DCAS. Work with leadership to prepare both internal and external sustainability communications.
  • Development and oversight of material management plan: Do complete development and oversight of material management plan, including making recommendations for improvement and doing required reporting.

 

  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Bring the experience to build and manage a team. Set work unit and/or project deadlines. Provides formal supervision to individual employees. When needed, approve subordinates’ recommendations for staff recruitment, selection, promotion, advancement, corrective action, and termination, and effectively recommend the same for direct reports to next-level management. Plan and monitor appropriate staffing levels and utilization of labor, including overtime. Prepare and deliver performance appraisal for staff. Mentor and coach team members to further develop competencies. Lead by example and model behaviors that are consistent with the organization’s values.
  • COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Bring the ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret complex business documents; respond effectively to sensitive issues; prepare reports, manuals, and other documents using distinctive style; make effective and persuasive presentations on complex topics to a variety of audiences; and motivate and negotiate effectively with key employees, management, and other stakeholders to take desired action.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

1. A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Hospital Administration, Health Care Planning, Business Administration, Public Administration or an approved related program and seven years of progressively responsible experience in health and medical service administration, public administration, personnel and labor relations, finance or appropriate functional discipline with an emphasis on planning, liaison and interorganizational relationships, or related administrative or managerial functions; or,
2. A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university and eight years of progressively responsible experience in health and medical service administration, public administration, personnel and labor relations, finance or appropriate functional discipline with an emphasis on planning, liaison and interorganizational relationships, or related administrative or managerial functions; or,
3. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

CEM certification required

Department Preferences

 

CERTIFICATION(S)/NYS LICENSE(S):

  • CEM required.
  • PE and LEED accreditation preferred.

EDUCATIONAL LEVEL:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (BA/BS) from four-year college or university required, with mechanical or electrical engineering preferred.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field preferred.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Financial and budgeting knowledge: In-depth knowledge of financial terms and principles (IRR, NPV, SPB). Capacity to conduct complex financial analysis. Capacity to forecast and prepare budgets.
  • Building systems knowledge: Strong knowledge of building systems (mechanical, electrical, and envelope) and energy efficiency technologies. Capacity to evaluate new technologies on an engineering basis. Familiarity with ANSI/ASHRAE 90.1-2013 or later.
  • Technical project management knowledge: Knowledge of energy project implementation, including lighting and controls projects. Familiarity with project management operations, including project planning, scope development, design and construction management, and project close-out.
  • Energy and carbon/emissions reporting knowledge: Knowledge of energy costs and billing, energy savings calculation methodologies, and emissions calculation methodologies. Training and accreditation part of development and performance management requirements.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of eight years of related experience in the energy management field, ideally including demonstrated expertise with:
  • Energy cost/utility rate analysis
  • Demand response and load management programs and controls
  • Building energy and water efficiency audits (both onsite and remote)
  • Energy analysis and calculations involving industrial/large commercial building systems and controls (e.g., HVAC systems, boilers, chillers, variable speed drives, generators, lighting, and controls)
  • Building system commissioning, retro-commissioning, and optimization, including HVAC optimization
  • Technical project management for energy and water conservation projects
  • Energy and sustainability program development and management

  • Advanced problem-solving and analytical skills: Capacity to interpret complex documents; conduct rigorous quantitative and qualitative analyses; set policy and business practices to achieve results; and solve problems involving multiple options.
