Job Description
The Operations Manager is responsible for site supply chain, and lab operations management.
This position provides oversight and leadership to ensure delivery of scientific services on time with high quality.
This role requires a science background, technical leadership, managerial competencies, laboratory experience, and a desire to support the holistic needs of the organization.
Leadership
– Provides leadership to organization in global and site business initiatives, including day to day operations, strategic planning and ongoing continuous improvement.
Provides change management leadership to site employees within a dynamic and global organization.
Human Resources Management
– Conducts management responsibilities with efficiency, respect, and empathy, in accordance with human resource policies and applicable laws.
Provides human resource management and oversight, including recruiting, hiring, day-to-day scheduling, training, performance management and employee development.
Leads ongoing initiatives to support employee engagement, morale and retention.
Supports site human resources strategy in alignment with business demand and growth plan.
Quality Operations – Supports site Quality Management Plan and site Quality Manager.
Maintains data management and reporting systems, with the highest integrity, including ensuring quality review of data and client reports.
Manages department SOPs and lab quality documentation requirements.
Responsible for defining training curriculum and ensuring employee training compliance.
Provides technical leadership in CAPA complaint investigations, troubleshooting failure, root cause analysis, and corrective actions to support ongoing quality improvement plan
Employee Health and Safety (EHS) – Supports business regulatory compliance and risk/liability management.
Provides leadership to site EHS council and manages site EHS program.
Develops employee training plans and manages team compliance to training requirements.
Site / Lab Management – Provides direct oversight to office and lab areas, manages cell culture facilities (BSL2) according to industry best practices.
Maintains the organization of the dock, sample management, freezer room and warehouse areas.
Manages site permits according to regulatory requirements, and serves as EHS point of contact for incident management, near miss program, reporting of injuries and point of contact for group EHS requirements.
Supply Management
– Provides oversight and support in lab procurement, vendor management and expense allocation.
Controls lab expenses, consumable and lab inventory according to financial budget controls.
Supports unit budgeting exercises, capital expenditure and costing.
Asset Management
– Manages department, equipment and infrastructure assets, ensuring care, maintenance and inventory according to company policy.
Directs equipment life-cycle planning, including instrument selection, evaluation, validation, implementation, and performance monitoring.
Provides leadership to team on CapEx investment and service contract strategy.
Oversees equipment monitoring program to ensure critical assets are monitored at all times.
Forecasting / Planning Resources
– Accountable to ensure operations supply meets client project needs and timeliness.
Maintains unit expenses and leads operational plans to ensure unit profitability.
Coordinates work flow with Supervisors, Study and Technical Directors, as applicable.
Provides strategic staffing plan, and ensures resources align with business demand and new growth initiatives.
Project Management/Innovation
– Leads scientific team in global innovation strategy, site portfolio expansion, and research and development objectives to ensure portfolio growth and market expansion with high return on investment (ROI).
Leads site business projects, as business requires (e.g.
ERP system, IT upgrades, QA projects, etc.)
Operations Analytics/Business Intelligence
– Collects and reports key performance metrics, leads continuous improvement and LEAN initiatives.
Drives organization through ongoing improvement, and operational excellence programs.
May support as the LEAN project manager.
Supply Chain Management
– Directly supervises the lab support, inventory and logistics team.
Manages material receipts by proactively tracking and resolving issues with client services.
Ensures study initiation according to study plan and deliverables.
Ensures receipt of shipments of samples for testing.
Maintains the organization of short and long-term storage of samples received for testing.
Provides QC approval of the compound receipt process.
General Management
– Maintains accountability in delivering to client needs/timelines and business financial objectives.
Manager may fulfill the role of Study Director, Lab Supervisor of Principal Scientist, as assigned.
Adjusts work hours and provides cross-functional support to other departments.
May be required to support directly in lab, if projects require.
Works effectively, with little to no oversight, to achieve business results, while adhering to project timelines and quality objectives.
Routinely communicates business forecast, project updates to internal and external clients.
Supports business unit goals and demonstrates Eurofins’ competencies, as defined in the job plan
Customer Support
– Develops client and scientific relationships, and provides oversight in project planning, execution, reporting, and interpretation.
Supports Client Services team, Scientific Director, and/or Study Director in proposal scope of work preparation and product management team in pricing and cost analysis.
Coordinates with global and local staff to resolve any client complaints, and reports CAPA events.
Supports client inquiries concerning the handling and shipping of samples.
Oversees preparation, packaging, and shipping of outgoing samples, supplies and products in accordance with all applicable regulations.
Manage logistics process and import/export requirements through required documentation and communication
Qualifications
The Ideal Candidate would possess:
Business degree (M.B.A) or business experience in addition to scientific degree / experience
2+ year lab supply chain management and process implementation
2+ year project management experience (PMP preferred)
2+ year operations analytics / business intelligence experience
Experience leading teams in a GxP compliant laboratory
Experience in business development, sales, and customer service, supporting technical presentations and proposals to internal/external clients
Experience leading employee health and safety programs
Proven experience with method development and portfolio creation in an industry setting Experience managing large scientific teams in a laboratory environment
Basic Minimum Qualifications:
10+ year broad academic or industry laboratory experience
5+ year operations management experience
5+ year human resources management experience
3+ year quality operations management experience
3+ year forecasting/budgeting/P&L management experience
3+ year Lean/5S or operations excellence and improvement leadership Minimum of B.A./B.S.
Biology or Chemistry degree with at least 5 years management experience
M.S.
or Ph.D.
preferred, but at least 5 years demonstrated management experience is required
