DESCRIPTION The EarthCube Office Executive Director applies advanced computational, computer science, data science, and cyberinfrastructure (CI) software research and development principles, with relevant domain science knowledge where applicable, to perform highly complex research, technology and software development which involve in-depth evaluation of variable factors impacting medium to large projects of broad scope and complexities.

Incumbent will design, develop, and optimize components / tools for major HPC / data science / CI projects.

Incumbent will be responsible for resolving complex research and technology development and integration issues.

Incumbent gives technical presentations to associated research and technology groups and management.

Incumbent will evaluate new hardware and software technologies for advancing complex data science, CI projects.

Incumbent may represent the organization as part of a team at national and international meetings, conferences and committees.

Incumbent will be responsible for assisting in the design, implementation and recommends new hardware and software technologies for advancing complex data science, CI projects.

Lastly, incumbent may lead a team of research and technical staff.

The Executive Director will provide oversight for the EarthCube Office (ECO) and communication between teams on 73 existing National Science Foundation (NSF) research and technical projects and also serve as a connector and key advisor to EarthCube.

The Executive Director will act as a high-functioning community manager by connecting and liaising geoscience-related activities and interdisciplinary teams via the Communications Lead, Science Coordinator, and ECO Coordinator to achieve the goals of the EarthCube Office and the NSF.

The Executive Director will be responsible for managing and tracking expenditures on NSF-funded subawards, Data Community and Training, annual reporting, fund management (in concert with the PI and fund manager), development and implementation of an evaluation plan, and other activities relating to overall coordination and communication between teams.

The Executive Director will be expected to operate independently, solve problems, and achieve progressive results using the existing resources and budget(s) available to them.

Working with the PI, ECO Coordinator, and Communications lead, the Executive Director will execute NSF-required annual reporting and plan documents related to cooperative agreement requirements, annual and workshop meeting logistics planning, oversee regular science engagement meetings, coordinate outreach, and follow-up on strategic opportunities.

The Executive Director will also be responsible for meeting with geoscientists and key EarthCube stakeholders to extrapolate science use cases, emerging scientific challenges that can be met with CI/data approaches, identify and mitigate any potential gaps, and scope out technical requirements where EarthCube can be impactful.

QUALIFICATIONS Demonstrated ability to regularly, effectively communicate with unit-level management.

Demonstrated ability to effectively coordinate with peers, subordinates, partners, and executive leadership to achieve agreed upon outcomes.

Demonstrated ability to initiate research proposals and acquire funding.

Demonstrated experience working with (US) funding agencies and knowledge of programs in the applicable scientific domains directorates and institutes.

In depth skills and experience in independently resolving complex computing / data / CI problems using introductory and / or intermediate principles.

Extensive experience applying best practices in data/CI challenges to domain-specific computing and processing challenges, especially in areas that relate to the geosciences.

Advanced experience working in a complex computing / data / CI environment encompassing all or some of the following: HPC, data science infrastructure and tools / software, and diverse domain science application base.

Demonstrated understanding of key geoscience data providers, their data products/repositories, geoscience and general cyberinfrastructure offerings especially NSF-funded and open science
