First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, North Carolina seeks an energetic and talented professional to work with the church staff in managing the role of music and the arts in the ministries and outreach of this growing church.

The person should have a strong background in the overall knowledge of liturgy and music. The selected applicant for this full-time position will conduct the Chancel Choir; coordinate the development and performance of music and the arts in worship, educational, and outreach programs; and provide leadership, expertise and support in the identification, development, and creative involvement of musical and artistic talent in the church community.

First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, North Carolina is located in western North Carolina, 30 minutes west of Asheville and is the Gateway to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. FUMC Waynesville is also three miles from Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center. Waynesville, with its moderate climate and natural scenic beauty is a tourist destination for many. FUMC Waynesville is deeply connected to the local citizens and lead in addressing many of the needs the community face. As a church, we strive to live up to our beliefs:

First United Methodist Church is an inclusive community welcoming every race, socio-economic status, family make-up, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, mental and physical ability, and faith history. The congregation is composed of approximately 1,600 members. On Sundays, the church currently has an online service, a 9:00 contemporary service and an 11:00 traditional service, with the potential return of a pre-Covid 3rdin-person traditional service. Average attendance for in-person worship is 600. Average attendance for our YouTube online service is 200 households. First United Methodist Church staff operates in a team environment with over 15 managerial staff members. The Music and Worship Arts Director would work closely with other staff members, participate in weekly meetings, would collaborate with staff worship leaders to help provide cohesive worship services in person and online.

Director of Music and Worship Arts

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Music degree required, Master’s preferred.
  • Working theological and liturgical knowledge of the patterns of worship, including traditional and contemporary.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of musicianship in training and conducting choral groups and lead a successful experience in complex settings.
  • Well trained in vocals.
  • Committed to Christian Leadership.
  • Creative spirit, multi-tasker, and team player.
  • Ability to work in a multi-generational church with a variety of music and arts preferences and styles.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to create community outreach in music programming.
  • Ability to discover, develop and maximize individuals’ gifts in music and the arts.
  • Ability to regularly navigate adaptations to worship as pandemic necessitates.
  • Ability to work within a dynamic and energetic team.
  • Consent to a background check.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Work in close coordination with the staff worship team in designing worship services and special services including Christmas and Holy Week services, weddings, and funerals, as well as all online services, and other services throughout the year.
  • Conduct the Chancel Choir and other vocal ensembles for traditional services.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings.
  • Work closely with technical staff on sound and video needs within the sanctuary space.
  • Provide leadership with the implementation of music in online worship services.
  • Identify, encourage and recruit persons with musical and artistic talents in the congregation and plan and implement expression of those gifts in various worship settings in the church.
  • Provide leadership for volunteers in the music and worship arts ministries.
  • Provide leadership for the music student intern program.
  • Envision, develop, and implement opportunities for persons in church musical groups to share their talent outside the church, thereby enabling the community to know and experience the ministries of the church.
  • Manage the music and worship arts budget.
  • Maintain the church music library and equipment.

Job Type: Full-time

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekend availability

Masks are required while inside the building. We offer online services for those wishing to worship from home and maintain social distancing while in person. Extra care is taken for sanitation and cleaning before and after events.
