Director of Industry Relations

Position OverviewThe Director serves as the Opus College of Engineering (OCOE) contact for industry leaders seeking to engage with undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty through research, provide employment opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, and connect with on-campus opportunities. They identify and assist in building innovative platforms for industry to engage with the OCOE community. They are responsible for recognizing opportunities for engagement and relationship building between industry and OCOE and facilitates introductions. 

This position leads curriculum development of the General Engineering Course (GEEN 2952), “Professional Development for Engineers” (taken by approximately 250 students each fall semester). Teaching responsibilities are shared with the Assistant Director of Industry Relations. 
They oversee industry sponsored career development opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, such as job fairs, company-specific events (e.g. hackathons), and leads industry sponsorship for the college-wide Design Day. |
| Duties and Responsibilities | 1. Serves as the Opus College of Engineering (OCOE) contact for industry leaders seeking to engage with undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty through research, provide employment opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, and connect with on-campus opportunities. Identifies and assists in building innovative platforms for industry to engage with the OCOE community. Recognizes opportunities for engagement and relationship building between industry and OCOE and facilitates introductions. 
2. Hires, trains, and evaluates Office of Industry Relation staff members, including the Assistant Director of Industry Relations and the Engineering Program Coordinator. 
3. Leads curriculum development of the General Engineering Course (GEEN 2952), “Professional Development for Engineers” (taken by approximately 250 students each fall semester). Teaching responsibilities shared with Assistant Director of Industry Relations. 
4. Individual Student Career Support: Schedules and conducts one-on-one student appointments with undergraduate and graduate students to discuss career goals and suggest strategies by which students can meet their career goals. Provides students with feedback on job search documents (e.g. resume, cover letter), employment program questions, and career decision-making considerations. 
5. Creates budgets and is responsible for the management of the Office of Industry Relations fund. Works with the Dean to fulfill grant contracts relating to industry engagement. Creates and drives systematic solicitation of funds for the Office of Industry Relations and college-wide industry related needs. 
6. Oversees industry sponsored career development opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, such as job fairs, company-specific events (e.g. hackathons), and leads industry sponsorship for the college-wide Design Day. 
7. Implements and manages programs and data systems needed for placement data reporting and student employment tracking. 
8. Represents the OCOE during recruiting and prospective student events. Sits on college and university wide committees regarding corporate engagement and student recruitment to industry. 
9. Represents Marquette Engineering at national/regional meetings. 
10. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested. |
| Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities | • Bachelor’s degree required. Preferably in engineering, higher education, business or human resources. 
• 5-7 years of related higher education, technical recruitment, or practicing engineer experience. 
• Administrative and leadership experience working with industry engineering managers, college students, career development and event management desired. 
• Experience advising students from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds or working with persons from a variety of cultures and backgrounds a plus. 
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to bring together multi-disciplinary team members to achieve goals. 
• Demonstrated attention to detail, professional attitude and ability to maintain confidentiality. 
• Familiarity with the culture of businesses and their relationship to engineering education. 
• Willingness to travel, primarily local. 
• Ability to work evening and weekend events during peak recruiting and college annual events 
• Ability to develop and manage budgets 
• Ability to think independently and make decisions appropriately 
• Ability to advise and counsel students appropriately 
• Values compatible with and supportive of Marquette’s mission as a culturally diverse, Catholic, Jesuit university 
• Strong computer competency to include proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; ability to quickly learn Marquette systems including, CheckMarq, D2L, and SharePoint; experience with database management software, web-based and social media applications is a plus. 
• A level of knowledge and experience that can be disseminated to industry engineering managers and undergraduate students through a solid understanding of the engineering field as they enter daily conversations with developing engineering students, faculty in engineering and engineering employers. |
| Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities | • Master’s degree preferred. 
• The complexity and volume of the responsibilities of this position make it preferable that the candidate has previously balanced a combination of this type of work to ensure s/he can handle the demands of the position in this environment. 
• Preferably possess commitment to, knowledge of, and experience with engineering education, career development, employment recruiting, relationship building, and event management 
• To understand the spectrum of career paths which engineers pursue and the preparation required for such careers, an engineering degree and relevant industry experience is advantageous. |
