Your role:
The Director, Leadership Excellence and Field Development is accountable for the strategy, direction, and oversight of North America Medical Affairs (NAMA) Developmental Learning specifically focused on advancing the competencies and evolution of skills for Leadership to achieve and maintain a world class organization.
The Director, Leadership Excellence and Field Development will identify development needs and skill gaps in Leadership and will translate this information into critical learning objectives to elevate performance and unleash potential of people managers.
They will drive the overall design, development, and implementation of leadership development programs which will support skill enhancement and coaching capabilities.
The Director of Leadership Excellence owns the Learning and Development strategy, design, and execution of leadership development and soft-skill focused programs (i.e.
self-awareness, emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, accountability, influence, etc.) that drive success in alignment with NAMA’s core deliverables and EMD Serono’s mission and values.
Through a proactive approach to building high-impact development experiences and resources, effectively administers programs and supports ongoing program improvements through traditional as well as blended learning opportunities.
The Director grows and expands a coaching culture and leadership excellence by facilitating thought-provoking discussions and coaching opportunities, as well as by providing consult, sharing best practices, and leading engaging learning workshops and journeys.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
Conduct needs assessments and competency/skill gap analyses for various segments of NAMA Leadership utilizing a variety of methods, including surveys, interviews, and focus groups Support the advancement of the EMDS Leadership competency model to improve leadership skills and impact related to Leadership behaviors and values Create, organize, and implement leadership development programs that includes a variety of offerings aimed at enhancing the technical skills, coaching capabilities, and leadership acumen of NAMA Leadership.
Execute on plans using a blend of formal instruction, experiential learning, self-driven learning, coaching, learning journeys, and development experiences.
Serve as a professional coach, providing coaching to internal stakeholders, both group & individual sessions Build and sustain relationships with NAMA Leaders to ensure a deep and thorough awareness of current and future leadership needs of NAMA Support the Medical Excellence and Training team through collaborative development, coordination, and delivery of programs that address functional skill gaps and advance soft and interpersonal skills of Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs), supporting a best-in-class team of field team, as needed Embed adult learning principles and innovative learning tactics into non-scientific content trainings, measure learning impact, and refine the learning strategy and approach, as necessary Collaborate with internal stakeholders (including Field Force Effectiveness and Head of NA Learning & Development) where appropriate to leverage existing resources and best practices to build an effective leadership program for NAMA Work with internal and external subject matter and leadership development experts to ensure implementation of optimal development for existing and emerging leaders Identify and customize content with external vendors / consultants to augment development initiatives to bring high quality services and materials to meet medical leadership needs Collaborate with NAMA Leadership teams to establish a strategic vision to build a formal development program for emerging / high-potential MSLs, as identified through management nomination and talent reviews in collaboration with appropriate stakeholders, including Human Resources Collaborate with NAMA Strategy & Operations to align and contribute Leadership Development plans into overall NAMA People Strategy and to operationalize training opportunities through existing NAMA forums, when appropriate/feasible (e.g.
NAMA Managers Meetings) Provide field coaching for MSLs through strategic ride-alongs, as needed
Who You Are
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s, PhD, PharmD, Or MD Required At least 5 years of previous experience in curriculum development and content curation required (focus on soft-skills, interpersonal skills, and/or leadership development strongly preferred) At least 10 years of previous leadership/management (people or program) experience in pharmaceutical industry required (within Medical Affairs strongly preferred)
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced relationship building, networking, facilitation, and presentation skills Proven project management skills to lead a concept from inception to execution Strong cross functional partnerships, credibility, and influence with leaders at various levels Ability to demonstrate creative and innovative strategic thinking Proven success record for driving strong results as an influential leader who obtains results through positive actions Work well under pressure, delivers to deadlines, adapts to change, and operates with a high tolerance for ambiguity Strategic ability to define a clear path in a complex environment, utilizing strong analytical skills to navigate through complex challenges, overcoming areas of ambiguity and deliver well thought out solutions to seize opportunities for growth Background in psychometric assessments and/or certification in development-focused programs a plus (i.e.
Discovery Insights, Situational Leadership, DISC, EQ, etc.) Formal coaching certification and experience a plus
