How you’ll help us Keep Climbing (overview & key responsibilities)

The SCM General Manager
– Technology is responsible for Delta Air Lines’ Supply Chain Category Strategy for high spend / complex technology categories, ensuring best practices across the sourcing lifecycle, key stakeholder alignment and successful implementation.

Supply Chain is responsible for negotiating and contracting products and services utilized by Delta’s IT department and more broadly technology used cross-divisionally.

This includes purchasing hardware, software, and services of all types including professional services and managed services.

The General Manager builds and supports relationships with executive stakeholders, business leaders, controllers, and other important partnerships.

The GM leads a team of strategic sourcing managers to understand the short and long-term business unit strategy, develop category plans, lead and assist in the execution of those purchasing activities, and assists in facilitating the timely closure of sourcing initiatives on behalf of his/her team.

The GM assists sourcing managers in negotiations and contracting and plays an important escalation role to help resolve issues and align leader decision making, as well support dependency management with many shared services required to close deals.

Close partnership with other shared services such as legal, information security, and finance are routine.

Occasional travel may be required.

Position Responsibilities:

Lead a team in the development of category strategies for areas of spend and multiple stakeholders

Support overall category strategies development and implementation; lead changes to strategy in line with the changing business environment

Define execution methodology and category management tactics and integrate into Category Strategy

Perform internal review of Category Strategy with Delta leadership and validate with key stakeholders

Establish category goals and track progress

Develop & enhance category expertise for Delta and in partnership with your BU

Identify key industry issues / trends and outline implications for Delta

Evaluate macro trends and opportunities based on input from supply market intel, benchmarking firms, tradeshows, or other relevant industry insight sources

Integrate external supply market research into category strategy

Adjust sourcing and category alignments as required

Evaluate sourcing requests and plans from category plans and assist in refining scope of engagement and resource alignment

Ensure timing and action are set and relevant; ensure documentation of addressable spend, preliminary savings levers, and savings target

Ensure award scenarios and cost/savings figures are objective and contribute to effective supplier selection

Monitor progress against: budget, delivery of benefits targets, specific category measures, etc.

Develop positive partnerships with key vendor partners and serve as an escalation resource in active negotiations

Provide development and coaching to direct / indirect reports to prepare employees for placement into future positions within SCM and broader Delta

Lead and participate in appropriate workforce planning, selection and development activities

Responsible for appropriately assigning duties and setting annual goals for team to execute on the strategic priorities and projects of SCM

Understand stakeholder landscape, create stakeholder plan, understand the role they play, and work to build and maintain relationships in partnership with other members of SCM

Advise client stakeholders seeking buy-in on recommended sourcing treatment based on category plans; clarify and prioritize the value required from the category

Serve as a trusted advisor aligning closely with client leadership to understand their business and goals

Drive an awareness of supplier expectations and requirements within the organization to foster win-win relationships

Drive reporting requirements to effectively manage strategic category information; communicate success stories and lessons learned

Participate in key client business meetings (e.g., key vendor meetings, occasional trade shows, financial /investment planning, financial governance meetings)

Builds relationships with associated partners in legal, security, finance, treasury – assists client leader in navigating other shared services complexities as it relates to sourcing/purchasing

What you need to succeed (minimum qualifications)

Bachelor’s Degree Required.

Supply Chain, Business Administration, Logistics, Finance, Engineering or related discipline preferred.

Master’s Degree and/or JD preferred.

What will give you a competitive edge (preferred qualifications)

Delivers high impact presentations internally and externally and develops persuasive and convincing communications (e.g., proposals, reports, plans) to secure commitment from business leaders

Ensures priorities and activities align to business vision (e.g., revenue growth, profit growth, cost reduction) and provides recommendations for strategy tied to the business’ operating model and core processe

Leads team responsible for sourcing strategy execution for complex projects and categories and provides prioritization and deployment guidance for implementation teams across broad categories/projects

Leads team responsible for competitive bidding process for highly complex bids (e.g., multiple businesses).

Provides guidance on complex pricing options best suited to Delta, market conditions, breakthrough technology use, and current competitive bidding practices that are consistent with Delta policies, ethical standards, and legal requirements

Has proven experience in leading complex negotiations, managing multiple teams/stakeholders to maximize impact, determining how best to use negotiation in concert with competitive bidding or other tools, and achieving significant business results

Leverages category expertise to identify and prioritize areas of opportunity and drives consensus with business team members on value of specification rationalization and implementation approach

Strong contracting acumen and ability to facilitate the resolution of escalation topics to leaders in partnership with law

Strong ability to speak to the underlying business issue of the legal term and facilitate a discussion of options

Strong ability to organize open issues and collect inputs needed from multiple stakeholders in order to resolve in the contract

Ability to build or leverage shared services to build, robust sets of cost models used to inform business decisions

May need to include options/scenarios (e.g.

split awards, vendor selection options) and build in handicap / value add characteristics to inform that total cost

Ability to model NPV based on actual cash flow of the negotiation/contract

Ability to break apart cost drivers and understand the itemization of vendor solutions to drive normalized / like-like comparison.

Ability to maintain consultative approach to sit down with leaders to discuss their portfolio of key contracts, vendors, upcoming negotiations/projects, and portions of a category plan that are relevant to them

Develops high degree of trust and strong relationships with multiple stakeholders of varying levels as a trusted advisor who can navigate and influence the organization, resolve conflicts, and deliver results

Can build and sustain highly engaged teams by adapting approach to fit the needs and dynamics of the team, while also forming close individual relationships to meet each employee where they are

Maintains a persistent focus on team development in the form of goal plans, individual development plans, and other improvement efforts designed to continuously improve
