Overview
The Shift Supervisor is responsible for the performance of laboratory procedures conducted in all sections of the clinical laboratory in accordance with the policies and procedures that are in effect.
The Key Areas of the laboratory are Blood bank, hematology, Coagulation, Immunology, Chemistry, Urinalysis and Microbiology.
The Shift Supervisor insures that all instruments are maintained in the laboratory.
The shift supervisor is expected to perform other functions not specified.
There are other duties such as teaching, purchasing, inventorying, writing procedures, etc.
that could be logical assignments for this position depending on the area in which the individual excels.
The shift supervisor will assume an active role in the LOC.
The shift supervisor will accept responsibility for total quality improvement efforts that are developed by the LOC and implement polices and procedures accordingly.
Responsibilities
Supervises personnel.
Enforces current hospital and laboratory personnel policies and procedures.
• Develops personnel through the coaching process, delegation of additional responsibilities, and
setting goals.
• Documents problems and takes actions as necessary.
• Schedules personnel fairly and in a timely manner to provide rotation of tasks, adequate coverage, and
effective utilization of personnel.
• Resolves technical and administrative problems.
• Consults with manager regarding problems and initiates corrective actions to resolve problems.
• Participates in achieving budgetary goals of the laboratory by using supplies, instruments, etc., in a cost
effective manner.
• Insures that supplies and reagents are adequately stocked.
• Orders supplies when necessary.
• Establishes, performs, documents, and monitors routine quality control and preventative maintenance.
Qualifications
Associates Degree preferred, with a minimum of 6 semester hours of chemistry and 6 semester hours
of biology, but not required.
Minimum of one year supervisory experience strongly preferred.Â
