The Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts is a world-class, multi-venue performing arts center on the campus of the University of Denver.
Home to the Lamont School of Music, The Newman Center hosts nearly 500 events annually.
In addition to performances by Lamont students and faculty, the Newman Center is an in-demand performance venue for numerous rental clients including the Denver Post Pen and Podium Series, Friends of Chamber Music, Denver Brass, Wonderbound Dance, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Urban League of Denver, The CELL and many others.
The Newman Center also presents nationally touring performing arts groups through its acclaimed series, Newman Center Presents.
The Newman Centers education programs are currently refocused on preK-12 students and teachers through collaborative curriculum development rooted in arts integration, supplemented by student workshops and teacher professional development.
Eventually, the Newman Center plans to expand its offerings.
Position Summary
The Associate Director of Education is responsible for the vision and strategy for educational initiatives at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA).
Essential Functions
Vision and Direction
Set a vision for Newman Centers educational programs that aligns with the NCPA strategic plan, DUs strategic plan (IMPACT 2025), the DU Chancellors Strategic Imperatives, and DU and NCPAs mission and values.
Create a cohesive, focused strategy for educational programs, including an attainable, measured expansion of these programs as funds and staffing allow.
Align education initiatives with curatorial direction of Executive Director, including the Student Matinee Series.
Work collaboratively with teachers and curriculum specialists at the school and district level to ensure programs meet the needs of the end users.
Represent NCPA as a thought leader in arts education for the city of Denver and the state of Colorado.
Programming
Oversee all content creation for education initiatives.
Create and sustain curriculum for K-12 students that aligns with Colorado Department of Education State Standards and is rooted in social-emotional learning and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Understand the major goals, challenges, and opportunities at the school and district level.
Ensure frequent school communication, including regular site visits to each engaged school, and cultivation of new partner schools.
Advocacy
Cultivate strategic partnerships with local arts and cultural organizations, foundations, and other institutions to support K-12 education, and eventually, lifelong learning.
Work with Executive Director and DU Advancement to identify funding for projects, help write grants and reports, meet and steward arts education donors, and seek out new funding.
Oversee marketing and communication strategy for education, including key channels for engaging with teachers and administrators, social media posts as appropriate, and season education brochure.
Management and Budget
Supervise hiring and training of volunteers, individual contractors, student employees, and eventually, part-time and full-time employees as budgets allow.
Identify and contract local and national teaching artists.
Oversee department budget and spending, including forecasts as requested by Director of Business & Operations.
Assessment
Maintain accurate and detailed records of participation, monitoring expected metrics.
Use patron, teacher and student assessments to modify programs and identify areas of growth.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of the performing arts and the creative process.
Understanding of state and national standards for lesson planning, and development.
Ability to assess and build connections between performing arts work and educational goals.
A commitment to serving students of all ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, races, socio-economic status, and abilities.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to foster and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, community partners, volunteers, and University officials.
Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups having competing interests and priorities within the University and community.
Proven ability to prioritize competing deadlines and projects.
Solid analytical and problem solving skills.
Excellent computer skills with experience using word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software.
Ability to work independently and as a part of a group.
Ability to take initiative, keep a positive attitude, and maintain a professional demeanor.
Ability to work some nights and weekends based on projects and performance schedules.
Required Qualifications
5-7 years of K-12 performing arts teaching experience. 3 years of educational leadership experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Arts Education, performing or visual arts discipline or related degree.
Experience working in an education role at a nonprofit arts organization.
Knowledge of national trends and best practices in arts education and arts integration.
Work Schedule
Monday
– Friday, 37.5 hours per week, some weekends and evenings required.
Exact schedule to be determined with hiring manager.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is 10.
Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $60,000
– $70,000.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting.
The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range.
The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
