Job Title: Director of Counseling Department: Counseling and Membership Services Reports to: Executive Director FLSA Status: Exempt Salary: Range $80,000-$100,000 DOE Mission A Place Called Home provides a safe, nurturing environment with proven programs in arts, education and wellness for the young people in South Central Los Angeles to help them improve their economic conditions and develop healthy, fulfilling and purposeful lives.

A Place Called Home is a dynamic, non-profit youth and community center located in South Central Los Angeles.

APCH provides educational programs, counseling, mentoring, music, dance, art, nutrition & agriculture, recreationand athletics.

We have a robust college preparation and scholarship program that has sent more than 430 young people from South Central to college.

In 2017 we started our Professional Readiness & Employment Program to support young people in preparing for and securing meaningful, good paying jobs.

A Place Called Home is expanding at a steady pace and there are exciting plans and opportunities ahead.

The position of Director of Counseling (DOC) will provide strong leadership for APCH’s mental health services and respective staff, driving and overseeing the department’s arc, daily work and advancement according to plan.

Summary Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the DOC will collaborate with Program, Operations and Development Directors to meet organizational goals and mandates, and will plan and lead key initiatives in Counseling Services to support future growth plans and respond to an ever-increasing demand for the organization’s services.

The DOC directs and administrates counseling services, including IEP intake, wraparound services, Food for Families, counseling and therapeutic services for APCH members and families, provides oversight for all parent support services; and is responsible for selecting, training and supervising department staff, including overseeing APCH counselors performing individual, group and family counseling sessions.

The DOC develops program evaluation materials and curriculum for their department and collaborates for agency wider iterations, participates on the Executive Management Team (EMT), and provides leadership in planning professional development and training for all staff and promoting team concepts such as coaching, counseling, mentoring and individual and professional growth and advancement.

Oversees and conducts specialized training for APCH staff regarding member engagement, manages department budget, collaborates with APCH Program Directors, Director of Operations, TYAS and Development; conducts research on best practices, maintains relationships with partner organizations, represents APCH at sector conferences.

The DOC oversees and manages their internal day-to-day department needs in conjunction with agency-wide systems, while partnering with others on the Executive Management Team and in our RISE High at APCH charter school partnership, to execute on strategic organizational plans and goals and intra-departmental initiatives, including staff and volunteer training and regular Team Case Conferences.

This position is responsible for creating, implementing, and maintaining efficient and effective systems that meet applicable guidelines of regulating agencies.

The position will interact with community partners to support two-way referrals; will work with staff toplan regular parent and community meetings, as well as timely responses to urgent constituent and community needs; will support and work with the Development Department to craft and steward funding applications, budgets and reports; and will host, attend and assign staff to attend relevant conferences, professional development trainings, and collegial convenings in service of constant improvement of APCH’s approach and work product.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Director of Counseling assumes the following responsibilities under the direction of the Executive Director and in collaboration when needed with other senior management staff (EMT) and RISE High administrators: Lead, collaborate and coordinate with the Executive Management Team to create, execute and support agency policy Lead, collaborate and coordinate with Program Directors to integrate agency services and resources for youth and families Lead and direct Counseling services according to industry standards and regulations Oversee, create and maintain all relevant forms, documentation and manuals for the Counseling Department Collaborate with department staff to plan and implement program activities Work in conjunction with all APCH programs to facilitate membership functions and psycho-educational and socio-emotional support for members and parents.

Provide routine training for department and agency staff members in accordance with industry best practices Collaborate in community to develop relationships and partnerships with other organizations Understand, abide by, and enforce California’s Mandated Reporting Laws at APCH Train department staff in department procedures and program requirements Supervise, guide and direct staff in coordination of department activities Provide referrals for outside counseling concerns and resources Oversee coordination of wrap-around services and Case Conferences Recruit members and families into Counseling program when indicated Oversee and Counsel APCH members and families through one-on-one, group, and play therapy techniques, as well as other clinical modalities Track member progress through case notes and Individual Program Plans (IPP) Conduct and coordinate counseling services for APCH members, including RISE High members Prevent and de-escalate harmful behavior in a behavior crisis situation to reduce members’ risk of injury and ensure safety of others, using Nonviolent Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) strategies Oversee, review and assess IEP reports for impacted members Create, manage and adhere to annual department budget Compile weekly reports for ED, monthly dept.
