Job SummaryThis position is responsible for driving assigned apparatus, which may include fire tankers, brush trucks, rescue and hazmat apparatus, in response to emergency calls. Under direct supervision, functions at the task level to accomplish tactical objectives. Scope is limited to operation of assigned apparatus outside of the smoke perimeter (IDLH) and does not require a FIT test for breathing apparatus.Work is performed and duties are carried out in accordance with established Borough core values: Accountability, Customer Focus, Dedication, Integrity, Responsiveness and Teamwork.Pay GradeF006Minimum RequirementsHigh school diploma or equivalent.Three years of experience driving large vehicles, or equivalent experience sufficient to understand the major duties of the position.Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated, prior to employment.Incident Command System classes required: ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 within 1 year of hire.Must complete Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC) training and obtain certification within three (3) months of hire.Must complete Engineer training within one (1) year of hire.Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and post-offer employment physical.Duties/ResponsibilitiesMust attend assigned portions of Basic Firefighter Trainee academy, Driver/Operator training, and obtain Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC) certification.Responds to various emergencies and calls for service, including fires, motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, rescues, public service assists, etc.Drives assigned fire/rescue apparatus to emergency scenes and during routine duties.Positions, sets up, and operates apparatus and equipment at emergency scenes.Performs a variety of technical and manual labor duties to operate fire pumps, generators, hand and power tools, and hoses.Calculates appropriate pump discharge pressures for given fire flows utilizing hydraulics calculations and standard operating guidelines.Inspects, maintains, cleans, stocks and loads a variety of firefighting, rescue, and EMS related tools, equipment and supplies.Employs and maintains various types of personal protective equipment and clothing.Participates and assists in training classes and drills.Cleans, maintains and performs minor repairs to fire station and grounds.Delivers public fire and life safety education programs, tours, lectures, etc.Operates hose lines, salvage and overhaul equipment, hand tools, power tools and other equipment.Prepares a variety of regular and special reports.Tests and inventories hoses.Performs related duties.
