Jensen Construction Company has been in business since 1912 and is the oldest operating subsidiary of the Rasmussen Group specializing in bridge building, heavy construction and marine contracts. It has always been a privately held company and is owned, operated, and managed by the fourth generation of Jensen family members. The company is a heavy highway contractor that does a majority of its work in the public sector, with a primary emphasis in bridge construction. Jensen Construction Company is based in the Midwest and has completed projects all over the United States. This position will primarily be based in Pierre, SD.
Position Overview:
The Bridge Surveyor is responsible for construction layout of structures, utilities and roadways on construction projects.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions):
- Perform in depth research of various records pertaining to current survey projects; refer to parcel maps and other related materials.
- Comply with (and actively promote) all safety policies and procedures including reporting all accidents, incidents and near misses to ensure adherence to safety policies.
- Operate survey equipment including total station, levels, GPS, and other equipment to perform project layout and construction staking.
- Maintain accurate, orderly, and legible field notes of survey work performed including lines, angles, distances, benchmarks, control points, and mathematical calculations; operate a computer and peripheral equipment including a plotter to compile survey notes and create drawings.
- Calculate deck grades, form grades, roadway grades, vertical and horizontal controls, and super elevations.
- Undertake detailed preliminary, topographic, construction, property, and other engineering surveys
- Work with a variety of City, County, and State Departments and outside contractors on survey projects
- Makes simple arithmetic calculations, (i.e. percentages. ratio, averages), performs inspections of materials, instruments, equipment or items to be tested for flaws or defects, observes obvious deviations in data and checks to ascertain cause
- Update running “as-built” drawings throughout the project.
Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred, or demonstrable equivalent.
- Minimum of two years of experience surveying and construction layout experience.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
- Ability to understand, follow, and communicate verbal and written instructions.
- Must have strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Office).
- Ability to read, write, and accurately perform basic mathematical functions including adding, subtracting, multiplication and division.
- Must possess a positive attitude and be able to take direction from supervisors.
- Must possess knowledge of Company policies and procedures, including safety.
- Must consistently produce and efficient, accurate work product.
- Able to work outside and in various physical elements.
- Ability to operate data collectors.
- Ability to communicate layout information to craftspeople.
