Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Tuskegee University seeks applications for the position of Department Head of Materials Science and Engineering at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.
Candidates should demonstrate research excellence through a combination of scholarly publications, extramural funding, and recognition through professional activities.
The successful applicant will be expected to provide strong leadership and vision for continued development of the department, including an expansion of the department’s interdisciplinary research activities and growth in student enrollment.
Duties include: Leadership in the department’s teaching, research, service, and accreditation activities: The Department Head must have a keen understanding of scholarship and the ability to articulate and promote scholarly excellence, particularly external funding.
The Department Head should foster a positive, collegial climate and participatory decision-making process within the department that promote excellence in the department’s programs.
Administrative responsibility for the department’s organizational performance: The Department Head is responsible for fiscal planning and oversight of the department’s budgets and resources, and for management of processes and procedures relating to human resources including recruitment, career development, performance evaluations, and retention of faculty, staff and graduate students.
Promote the department within and outside the University: The Department Head is expected to establish effective liaisons with other departments, college and university administration, funding agencies and alumni.
The ultimate goals are to increase the public and professional recognition for the department, and to attract resources that strengthen and broaden the department’s research, teaching, and service missions.
Perform other related duties as assigned Qualifications: Must have a Bachelor’s degree in either Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering Must have a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline Must have experience in teaching and research of Materials Engineering in academic institutions Must have experience in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students Persons with research experience in metals and their alloys will be given preference Preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications: Demonstrated capacity to provide strong leadership to support and promote excellence in teaching and research Experience in obtaining research funding from various funding sources An appreciation for diverse research and outreach programs and the synergy of these efforts Proficiency for program administration and evaluation, curriculum improvement, fiscal management and development, and collaboration with stakeholders Exceptional organizational, communication and interpersonal skills The ability to create and enhance relationships with other programs and units at the university A commitment to cultural diversity and community Experience with recruiting and mentoring faculty members and graduate students Applicants should submit the following information in addition to the employment packet requirements listed below: A full curriculum vitae A statement that addresses each of the required and preferred qualifications Names and addresses of at least three references Salary Commensurate with education, training and experience The statements contained in this job announcement reflect general details as necessary to describe the principal functions of this job, the level of knowledge and skill typically required and the scope of responsibility.
