Location: Claremont, CA Job Posting Title: Assistant/Associate Director of Public Affairs and Communications Job Details and Requirement: BASIC FUNCTION: Claremont McKenna College seeks a skilled writer, editor, and creative professional to help us tell the CMC story.
The Assistant/Associate Director of Public Affairs and Communications will be the primary writer for College’s digital and print channels as well as internal communication.
The Assistant/Associate Director of Public Affairs and Communications will have a passion for capturing the intellectual vitality of a small liberal arts college, including faculty and student life, athletics and personal and academic growth in a residential setting.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Writer/Editor/Digital Communicator Serve as a key writer and editor for College external and internal communications, including the website, magazine, newsletters and marketing materials.
The Assistant/Associate Director may be called upon to contribute to presidential communications.
Actively search for unique CMC stories by developing stakeholder relationships across campus – administration, faculty, student leaders – and through immersion in campus activities.
Manage contracted copywriters/editors.
Manage and mentor student writers.
Produce digital content for website.
Produce special reports, and other publications and communications.
Strategically contribute to social media to optimize audience engagement.
Help ensure consistent College messaging on social media through monitoring and proactive outreach.
Engage in all aspects of the creative process, including collaborating with photo, video, graphics and web design staff.
Manage collaboration with the Center for Writing and Public Discourse, which supports the College’s mission to “educate its students for thoughtful and productive lives and responsible leadership” by fostering excellence in written and oral communication.
May be called upon to write/edit for admission and recruitment materials.
Performs other essential duties and tasks specific to the position and as may be assigned from time to time.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in English, communications, journalism or other liberal arts discipline.
EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 3 – 5 is required.
Level of Assistant Director or Associate Director will be determined by the College at time of hire and based upon experience.
LICENSES: A valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.
Deploy professional skills in writing and media relations and in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College’s strategic interests.

Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of projects/tasks/duties/assignments.

Use assigned technology/devices/equipment to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
Handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks, meet deadlines/timelines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College with a high standard of integrity and ethics, in support of the College’s strategic vision and the division’s/department’s annual goals.

OTHER: REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday.
Holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required.
Travel may be required.
Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
This is a 12-month position.
CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS: This is a regular, full-time, exempt level position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: Light (up to 20 lbs.) SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Manage contracted copywriters/editors and manage and mentor student writers.
