Historically, the U.S.
workforce has been comprised predominantly of forty-hour-per-week full-time employees (FTEs) who mostly are eligible for substantial employer-subsidized medical benefits.
But the structure and composition of the workforce is changing dramatically.
As employers move to agile staffing models, many roles that used to be filled with benefit-eligible permanently-employed FTEs are now being filled with benefits-ineligible intermittently-employed employees, thus giving rise to the intermittent workforce (“IWF”) comprised of worker types such as variable-hour part-time, contingent, non-variable-hour contractor, gig, etc.
In response, UnitedHealthcare is introducing a new program designed specifically for lower-wage, higher-turnover W-2 employees who traditionally are non-benefits-eligible called the UnitedHealthcare Intermittent Workforce Program featuring FlexWork medical and ancillary products.
