**Job Summary:**The Principal Product Safety Specialist will provide functional, technical, or process expert level consulting to project teams for new product development (NPD) projects as well as to existing product improvement projects (i.e., Productivity and Maintenance) while working within a cross-functional team.
This position will:
• Drive to the analysis of highly complex new regulatory developments and aid in the definition of simplified processes for company implementation at the direction of more senior Product Safety staff
• Validate and correct safety and compliance efforts of junior staff
• Require the ability to work effectively with other disciplines including Product and Design Engineering, Marketing, Industrial Design, Chemistry, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain**Job Responsibilities by Capability:**Business Acumen – 5%
• Defines program success parameters/metrics and drives path forward to achieve success in most timely and cost effective manner.
• Supports senior level Product Safety staff within the business segment in developing department budget.
• Drives and guides junior staff in grouping similar products into logical and sustainable categories that promote most economical use of staff time and budget to assure safety and compliance.
• Guides junior staff in identifying and communicating project level hazards and risks to project manager (PM) and team members with minimal guidance from senior Product Safety staff.
• Intimately understands business impacts associated with product safety test plans in addition to implications of test results.
• Concisely and precisely communicates to PMs and team members onhow Product Safety deliverables affects project performance deliverables, schedule, and costs.Technical Leadership – 25%
• Provides technical leadership in solving chemical and toxicological related problems for product safety issues
• Lead and/or manage the design, monitoring and interpretation of in vitro / in vivo toxicology or clinical safety studies as needed
• Drives departmental research and assessments conducted by junior Product Safety staff.
• Guides junior staff in performing new chemical/component safety assessments and developing next step recommendations.
• Delivers advanced design and test plans to PMs.
• Works independently or as lead specialist on a project teams with minimal guidance from Product Safety management staff.
• Determines technical project specifications by reviewing project proposals cross-functionally and provides this to PM.
• Develops and maintains timing and action plans for projects of large scope with guidance from senior PMs and provides this information to PM.
• Leads investigation of new compliance test equipment and implementation methodology.Problem Solving – 30%
• Acts as the company’s subject matter expert (SME) and delivers creative solutions to business-critical challenges/roadblocks PMs or functional heads.
• Author, document and communicate human health safety (risk) assessments taking into consideration identified hazard and user exposure according to intended product use or foreseeable misuse
• Foresees and mitigates problems, conducts root-cause analysis, and implements solutions using a systematic approach.
• Implements existing technologies on a category level.
• Contributes to the research of emerging and disruptive technologiesand supports the summarization of strengths and weaknesses and recommendation of best option for product design, testing and regulatory compliance to PMs or functional heads.
• Develops product safety test plans and implements existing testing methodologies on a program level and recommends improvements to Product Safety management team.
• Develops and refines internal Product Safety acceptance criteria andhelps junior staff resolve anomalous results and implement corrective actions.Communication – 10%
• Effectively author and communicate toxicology information and human health risk assessments to internal and external technical experts as well as project managers
• Develops technical test reports, includes mitigation plans (if required) to PMs or functional heads.
• Challenges popular points of view when necessary and provides alternative recommendations to PMs or functional heads.
• Summarizes complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience and stakeholders.
• Recommends and presents solutions and opportunities in forums for ideation and technical sharing.Organizational Agility – 10%
• Conduct safety and exposure assessments for products to support global regulatory compliance related to chemicals of concern
• Leverages deep understanding of segment level structure and job relevant cross-function structure in addition to primary and supporting policies, processes, and procedures.
• Serves as product safety and regulatory compliance expert on cross
– functional teams to work seamlessly across boundaries of company, culture, and geography for successful NPD.
• Contributes to negotiations with development and delivery organizations to balance the needs of NPD, compliance, productivity and product derivatives to ensure the best business outcome.
• Drives products safety and compliance initiatives and practices across business regions.Technical Mastery – 20%
• Optimizes Product Safety Assessment methodologies, certification processes, and alignment to retailer acceptance programs.
• Advances product safety performance of key suppliers to align with Newell standards.
• Combines an advanced understanding of product specifications, cost constraints, industry practices, and regulatory expertise to drive high quality, sustainable, and efficient NPD.
• Demonstrates expert understanding of consumer product and safety requirements, hazard classification, communication, product risk assessment, hierarchy of hazard controls, and risk management.
• Acts as a Newell SME of core discipline and general knowledge of other disciplines relevant to the business segment.
• Demonstrates strong understanding of core discipline and basic knowledge of other disciplines relevant to business segment toProduct Safety management team.
• Develops new product seal certification programs (such as U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency Design for Environment seal, UL or
• JPMA) that Marketing can use to better promote customer acceptance and drive sales.
• Bachelor’s degree biology, toxicology, public health, or a related field (required)
• Advanced degree (MS, MPH, PhD) in toxicology, pharmacology, public health, or related health science discipline (preferred)
• 8-10 years related experience required
• Certification by the American Board of Toxicology (DABT) or other equivalent health science professional certification is highly desirable
• Expert in development and execution of new specifications, protocols, policies, process, and procedure
• Expert in hazard classification and communication, product risk assessment and risk management
• Proven track record of successfully leading compliance systems while partnering with suppliers
• Strong working knowledge of compliance/EHS management systems and industry regulations
• Demonstrates experience working closely with 3rd party test labs to resolve challenges, strengthen standards, interpretation, and application
• Demonstrates understanding of cost of failure financials and experience managing cost of failure reduction projects
• Demonstrates strong interpersonal and project management skills
• Demonstrates effective planning/organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to multi-task and set priorities
• Demonstrates evidence of taking initiative and/or leading projects
• Demonstrates strong project management skills
• Demonstrates strong problem solving skills with evidence of systematic approach for identifying problems, root-cause analysis, and implementing the “fix”
• Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills
