Responsibilities.

Design and engineer ventilation and fire and life safety systems for underground stations and tunnels..

Analyze subway networks using Subway Environment Simulation (SES) software.

Develop CFD models to size, evaluate and optimize tunnel ventilation.

Generate internal/external reports based on findings..

Participate in permitting and regulatory meetings to present CFD modeling results..

Develop compliance matrices for Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) safety regulations..

Perform engineering analysis and provide sound engineering/safety rationales to demonstrate how developed systems meet or exceed current vehicle standards and regulations..

Complete compliance matrices for NFPA 130 and related fire and life safety standards..

Lead design teams in the preparation of project calculations, drawings and specifications for mechanical and life safety systems including, road and rail tunnel fire smoke control systems, emergency ventilation systems, HVAC systems, piping and hydraulic systems, drainage systems, pumping systems, and fire protection systems..

Basic Requirements.

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field..

5+ years of experience in using computational fluid dynamics codes and SES software for smoke control and fire modeling..

PE certification in fire protection or mechanical engineering, or ability to receive certification within 6 months of start..

Preferred Qualifications.

Experience with NFPA 502 and NFPA 130..

Master of Science or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field..

Ability to understand trends and best practices in the Mechanical Engineering and Tunneling Industry..

Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills..

Detailed knowledge of mechanical engineering design and construction principles, methods, and standards related to the tunneling and transit industries..

Ability to work both independently and within a team environment..

Familiarity with CFD codes for building physics applications..

Additional Requirements.

Position may require long hours and weekend work..

Able to travel for short and extended trips as needed.

Up to 20% travel..
