CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE
Michael Baker International’s Construction Services staff supports clients by acting as their trusted on-site agent through all phases of construction, from pre-design to close-out, by providing qualified construction managers, inspectors, constructability reviewers, schedulers, estimators and safety experts.
As new technologies evolve throughout the construction industry, innovative ideas are required to maintain and deliver successful construction projects.
DESCRIPTION
The Senior Civil Inspector will be responsible for assisting with the installation of detailed engineered highway, transit and other projects.
Other Tasks will be:
Assists the project team in the preparation of moderately complex studies, construction documents, drawings, maps, reports, and supporting documentation Assists with the preparation of quantities and construction cost estimates Participates with the project team in the preparation of construction drawings and as-built drawings such as those needed for pipelines and natural gas facility stations Maintains a presence at work sites, reporting findings to Engineers and/or Project Managers Compiles construction reports documenting daily activities at construction sites Participates with the project team in meetings with clients regarding project issues Assists the Project Manager with defining the scope of work and man-hour requirements Coordinates with technical staff to ensure timely and accurate document and drawing preparation Assists the project team with document preparation for regulatory agencies to obtain required permits Assists the project team with problem solving techniques Participates in a safety culture in a construction setting Understands the importance of complying with environmental requirements Directly supervises 0-5 employees in Inspector roles.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma Required.
2-year Technical Degree with an emphasis in engineering, mathematics and the basic sciences and 1 year of related heavy construction experience or 5 years of pipeline construction experience in natural gas/hydrocarbon systems, or similar construction experience preferred
Minimum 10 years’ experience: min.
6 years VDOT experience; VDOT certifications or similar construction experience.
Intermediate to expert skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Ability to read and understand piping, civil, and electrical design drawings
General working knowledge of highway, bridge or infrastructure systems
Ability to manage and prioritize project assignments to meet competing deadlines
Good interpersonal, communication, and conceptual thinking skills
Ability to work well independently and within a team setting
Availability to travel to project site locations
Availability to work overtime and occasional long hours
Valid driver’s license
Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Maintain the required Certifications for various VDOT inspections including:
Soil and aggregate compaction VDOT or NICET Level II
Asphalt Field Level I & II VDOT
Hydraulic Cement Concrete Field VDOT or NICET Level II

Slurry Surfacing VDOT
Surface Treatment VDOT
Flagger Certification VDOT
Certification for erosion & control inspection VA DEQ
Nuclear Gauge Safety Training NRC**recognized provider
Stormwater Management Inspector cert.
VA DEQ
Intermediate work zone traffic control VDOT approved provider
10-hour OSHA safety training OSHA
GRIT (Guardrail Certification) VDOT
