Senior API Engineer

Position Purpose

You will serve as a technical expert focused on transforming Sleep Number’s Supply Chain system integration capability to leverage modern integration technology and have an API led approach. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. The ideal candidate will have a passion for engineering API’s to be  intuitive, scalable and experience focused. Prior experience and collaboration with digital product teams and internal and external customers is preferred. You will be able to work in an entrepreneurial environment, and partner closely with a team of technologists and product managers to develop innovative solutions and tools with a “customer first” mindset. This role is open to a remote worker, otherwise will reside at our Headquarters location in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Primary Responsibilities

• Modernize the integration capability to be API led by providing hands on engineering leadership
• Serve as a technical expert in leading the engineering, delivery, and support of APIs with an agile mindset
• Focus on scalable and flexible API design to create a microservice and RESTful based architecture
• Ensure performance, quality, scalability, security and responsiveness of API’s
• Collaborate with multiple teams to design and deliver new features and enhancements
• Provide clear communications to stakeholders regarding outcomes, timelines and issues
• Maintain a pulse on emerging technologies, experiment and drive innovations

Key Performance Indicators

• Operational excellence of Sleep Number’s application platforms
• Deliver a framework for documentation, development and deployment of scalable and reusable API’s
• Enhance applications and integrations with high quality and customer delight
• Mentor/Coach team members to build integrations and API’s using industry leading practices

Position Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields required. Master’s
  Degree preferred.
• Progressive software and API development experience in dynamic, fast paced environment
• Build API capabilities and lead integration modernization strategy
• Expert in RESTful and microservices based design principles
• Proficient with event driven platforms like Kafka, RabbitMQ, Apache Pulsar
• Experience with performance profiling, tuning, and policy definition for APIs
• Experience designing and documenting API’s in technologies such as RAML, Swagger
• Write well designed APIs using popular programming languages like Java, .Net, JavaScript, Ruby on Rails
• Building APIs and working with related technologies (API Gateway, API Security, API Frameworks, NoSQL)
• Proven background with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google

• Creative problem solver, with strong analytical skills
• Collaborative aptitude and experience working in a fast paced, ever-evolving environment
• Technical leadership experience on medium and large-scale initiatives is desired
• Experience working with agile/scrum methodology required
• Ability to organize, prioritize work, meet deadlines, and work independently
• Strong written and verbal communication skills across a variety of audiences, both technical and nontechnical

Working Conditions

• Flexible availability required – business needs may require work during non-core business hours
• Typical office environment, requiring at least 8 hours standing or sitting
