JOB DESCRIPTION Title:    PACU Registered Nurse                                                                                     Category:    IDepartment:     Peri-operative Services                                                                           Pay Grade:   12Reports To:  Director of Nursing, Critical Care and Peri-operative Services                     Status:   Non-Exempt  I.                    Basic Function of Position:  II.                 Duties and Responsibilities:Ø  Appropriate assessment and reassessment of patient needs pre and post-op.  Pain is assessed on all patients and appropriate intervention is documented. Ø  Reviews the patient medical record using the preoperative verification process to confirm that the appropriate documents and available and within the approved timeframe. Ø  Reviews, as indicated,  that the physician has marked the surgical site.  Ø  Provides safe, direct patient care in a manner that respects privacy and following hospital policies and procedures. Ø  Upon discharge to home from PACU utilizes available opportunities to provide individualized health education to patient and significant other involved in care at home.Ø  Communicates nursing interventions and responses of care to appropriate members of the health team and documents nursing interventions and responses to care.Ø  Accepts responsibility for individual nursing actions, competencies and behavior.Ø  Applies the principles of medication administration to safely administer medications by all routes.Ø  Initiates IV access, performs venipuncture and collects blood specimensØ  Respects patient rights and ensures that others within the organization respect those rights.Ø  Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served.Ø  Participation in community projects for hospital and community well-being expected. III.     Minimum Qualifications: A.     Education and/or Experience:Ø  Graduate of an accredited nursing program.Ø  Current licensure as RN in the State of West Virginia or new graduate with temporary license.Ø  Current certification of Basic Life SupportØ  Current certification    ACLS, PALS, NALS. B.     Skills and Abilities:Ø  Must have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.Ø  Ability to learn new tasks and makes good judgments.Ø  Ability to function in stressful situations.Ø  Ability to work in close contact with patients.Ø  Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to communicate and interact effectively with people.Ø  Requires manual dexterity to deal with the technical demands in the profession.Ø  Must have skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff.PACU Registered Nurse Job Description Page 2  Ø  Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.Ø  Competencies per the surgery department annually. III.               Physical Requirements:Ø  Requires sufficient verbal and listening skills when exchanging information with the public.Ø  Requires the use of equipment, such as a computer terminal, fax machine, telephone, copier, calculators, in addition to patient care equipment.Ø  Requires the ability to stand and move about for an extended period of time.Ø  Requires frequent bending, stooping or stretching.Ø  Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity.Ø  Requires the ability to distinguish letters or symbols.Ø  May require the ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds.Ø  Requires the ability to react calmly and effectively in stressful situations. IV.               Environmental Conditions:Ø   Majority of work is performed in the patient care setting of the hospital surgery  Department.Ø  Subject to irregular hours based on the needs of the department.  Hours of work vary.Ø  Frequent contact with medical, nursing, and ancillary staff, as well as with the general public.Ø  Exposure to toxic substances, radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a surgery/PACU department
