What does it mean to be a Lathe Operator?
The Lathe Operator position on the Round Knives team works in the production/manufacturing operations with close, direct supervision to perform (or train to perform) basic machine operation to produce precision parts. Associates at this level may be moved and cross-trained on several pieces of equipment or departments so as to develop a core understanding of manufacturing concepts.
You will do this by:
- Operates multiple machines at the same time as requested
- Meets required productivity for selected machines
- Performs straightforward set up and operation of assigned machines; makes edits to existing programs, selects tooling and fixtures, properly loads and unloads parts
- Performs daily PMs of machines
- Reads Blueprints, routes, part verification/ID
- Efficiently uses calipers, micrometers, protractor, and other measuring equipment to verify all products produced meet customer specifications and are in accordance with Company quality standards.
- Accurately follows work instructions for the product being processed
- Trains new or less experienced associates as requested
- Provides continuous improvement/cost saving suggestions
- Follows 6S methodology
- Complies with Zenith Cutter’s Health and Safety Policies
Lathe Essential Duties (Train and become proficient on)
- Changes inserts
- Machines tolerances of +/- .005; surface finish 32 Ra
- IDs and downloads programs
- Blows off and deburrs; wipes dry if using coolant

Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Solid work history or school/academic record
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience working in a manufacturing environment strongly desired
- Prior CNC operation, set-up, and/or programming experience strongly desired
- Experience driving a sit-down forklift
Additional Knowledge & Skills:
- Must possess Intermediate math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals, algebra, basic geometry- identifying angles)
- Ability to accurately read & follow work instructions
- Possesses basic computer skills (able to accurately enter data into ERP system)
- Ability to identify when tooling requires change
- Possesses basic computer skills (able to accurately enter data into ERP system)
- Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment
- Ability to effectively communicate
- Ability to work in a team environment (ability to work independently as well as within a team)
- Willingness to be cross trained on multiple machines/equipment
- Ability to meet attendance requirements (arrives on time and maintains a good attendance record)
- Mechanically inclined
- Ability to learn & read blueprints
- Ability to learn and use calipers, micrometers, and other measuring equipment
Physical | Visual Demands:
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to stand, walk, use hands, climb/balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach with arms and hands
- Ability to see items close and at a distance
- Ability to identify and distinguish colors
Work Environment:
- Manufacturing: Loud (Examples: metal can, manufacturing department, large earth moving equipment)

Shift Hours: 1st Shift: Monday – Thursday, 4:30am – 3:00pm; overtime as required.
