The purpose of this position is to perform work directing and participating in various maintenance and/or construction activities of daily work crews.Work Schedule: 7 Day operations managing day and evening crews , 40 hours a weekThis position is open until filled with applications being reviewed weekly.Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesEssential Duties and Responsibilities:+ Supervises and participates with assigned labor crews in performance of a variety of maintenance and/or construction work.
Inspects work to ensure completion in accordance with established specifications, standards and deadlines.+ Administers or makes recommendations for routine personnel matters affecting subordinates, including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, assigning, scheduling, granting leave, appraising and disciplining, etc.
Submits records and reports as required by City management.+ Works overtime in order to complete an ongoing project or in case of an emergency.+ Assigns crew members to various work tasks; trains work crewmembers, as necessary.+ Monitors materials used on work sites, including costs, quantity and surcharges.+ Operates and trains crew to operate various heavy and light equipment, hand tools and other necessary equipment.+ Monitors project and task completion.+ Ensures proper allocation of equipment, tools, supplies and materials to complete assigned work; oversees and participates in operation and minor maintenance/ repair of tools and equipment.+ Acts as a working supervisor assisting crews with various tasks and assignments.+ Monitors work zone safety and provides safety information and training.Supplemental Functions:+ Performs other similar duties as required.Education & ExperienceEducation and Experience Requirements:High school diploma or equivalency and (1) to three (3) years of related experience.Licensing and Certifications:+ Valid North Carolina CDL class B to be obtained within 6 months of hire.+ CPR/First Aid, or ability to obtain within the first 6 months of hire.Applicants with equivalent experience or education may be considered.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Working ConditionsKnowledge:+ Advanced knowledge of procedures and practices to analyze and resolve unusual or difficult problems.+ Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of landscaping (reseeding, pruning, etc.) and park maintenance (janitorial, small engine repairs, etc.).+ Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the assigned work area.+ Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.+ Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of modern office management, including a knowledge of Google Suite, spreadsheet, and filing maintenance programs.+ Considerable knowledge of arithmetic, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.+ Working knowledge of general management and organizational principles and practices.Skills and Abilities:+ Skilled in coordinating personnel, equipment, and supplies.+ Skilled in the operation of specialized equipment related to grounds maintenance (mowers, trimmers, chain saws, blowers, etc.).+ Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment and discretion in establishing, applying, and interpreting policies and procedures.+ Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.+ Ability to exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the general public.+ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.The City of Asheville offers a comprehensive benefit package and other programs, resources, policies and practices that integrate work/life strategies.
