Come work with us!ROLE:The Fiction Editor plays a critical editorial role in the creation and production of fiction publications.RESPONSIBILITIES:As needed, contribute to new concepts brainstorming sessions, recruit authors, solicit and evaluate book proposals, and conduct contract negotiations with authors, agents and illustrators.As needed, assist with creation of new series settings, characters, and plots, helping to formulate author guide.Manage author and client relationships, ensuring proactive, positive, and accurate communication.Develop and shepherd manuscripts through all phases of the production process, from initial proposal and outline creation to manuscript review to the various editing stages to the final proof. Handle all other editorial tasks associated with bringing a book to market.Develop cover art concepts and collaborate with freelance and in-house artists to create unique, compelling cover artwork for each book.Write captivating back cover, flap, and marketing copy. Create memorable titles appropriate for the genre.Manage updating of data and content to company databases as required.Work closely with multiple in-house departments (Production Services, Marketing, and Art) in order to maintain schedules and meet deadlines.Perform various editing functions throughout the development process of each manuscript. This includes:Ensuring that manuscripts meet in-house style standards. Correcting grammar, spelling, and punctuation as needed throughout.Checking facts and making corrections where necessary.Looking for consistency and logic in character actions, dialogue, plot, pace, and overall tone of the story.Reading/editing with the specific needs of the Annies audience in mind.Evaluating word choice, clarity of writing, sentence, and paragraph flow. Rewriting where needed to improve the product.Assessing transitions between scenes/chapters. Making improvements when needed.Revising and improving areas that are heavy with word or phrase echo, repetitive thoughts or actions, crutch words, etc.Other revisions as needed to polish a manuscript and make it a thrilling read that exceeds the expectations of our fiction readers.QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelors degree2+ years of professional editorial experience in literary publishingIn-depth knowledge of the mystery/cozy mystery, womens fiction, and romantic suspense genres.Highly creative and able to work independently.Superb ability to clearly express thoughts and ideas through the written word.High level of confidence in ones ability to make on the spot decisions and modify or rewrite passages of fiction where required to improve the overall product.Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat.Organized with a remarkable eye for detail.Excellent follow-through and ability to meet tight deadlines.We demonstrate our commitment to the talented people who make our company successful by offering:Competitive pay rates and bonus structures401(k) retirement plan with company matchHealth, dental, vision, life and disability insurance optionsHoliday pay and PTOEducation reimbursement assistanceYou can learn more about Annie’s at www.annies-publishing.com
