Environmental Coordinator

Dollar Tree Stores

This is a Full-time position in San Francisco, CA posted November 17, 2021.

ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE SPECIALIST

The Environmental Compliance Specialist purpose is help ensure that Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores in California successfully execute the Company’s environmental and safety policies, programs, and processes in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. A primary responsibility is auditing each store in the assigned geography once a year and providing training to store management in support of store-level execution.

  1. ESSENTIAL ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

a. Conduct, Analyze, and Communicate Audit Results: 55% of time

  • Complete specialist training curriculum and periodic agency refreshers (e.g., annual CUPA training conference) on environmental compliance and safety topics.
  • Audit stores in assigned CA region on compliance programs including retail hazardous waste, hazmat business planning, and safety policies and practices.
  • Compile and analyze audit data. Communicate audit results to compliance leadership, business owners and key stakeholders.
  • Maintain audit date files to support the timely generation of standard and customized reports.

b. Train and Coach Store Management and Field Leadership: 20% of time

  • Provide training and coaching for SMs, ASMs, and DMs on retail hazardous waste, hazmat, and safety policies and programs.
  • Solicit, review, and communicate feedback on learning solutions and training strategies to compliance leadership.
  • Work collaboratively with retail leadership to identify and address learning/performance issues.
  • Make recommendations for improving training effectiveness.
  • Assist in the development and distribution of communications, tools, and resources to support compliance across all CA stores.

c. Evaluate Program Effectiveness and Impact: 15% of time

  • Assist in ongoing evaluation of existing policies, programs and practices against current and future business demands/objectives and regulatory requirements.
  • Recommend changes and updates to existing policies, programs and practices.
  • Assist with identifying the need for new policies and programs and assist with their design, development, and implementation.
  • Collaborate with operations/store leadership to identify and communicate best practices.
  • Ensure that store management and field leadership have the knowledge and tools they need to successfully execute these programs.

d. Support Regulatory Inspections: 10% of time

  • Provide information and support to the stores on regulatory policy and process.
  • Review every environmental agency or safety agency inspection performed in assigned CA region.
  • Ensure that violations are clearly communicated, understood, and resolved within the timeframe required.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with area inspectors.
  • Compile and analyze agency inspection data. Communicate inspection results to compliance leadership, business owners and key stakeholders.
  1. DECISION MAKING
  • What the specialist decides:
    Manage own workload, identify weekly priorities, schedule own tasks/time.
    Identify and address instances of non-compliance.
    Determine when to escalate issues, challenges, and risks.
  • What the specialist must refer to management:
    Approval on any fines, penalties, and expenses over $100.00.
    Changes or exceptions to established policies/programs, especially those that impact store operations.
    Requests, discussions, and agreements with regulators.
    Whether or not to tolerate, or spend significant resources, to remedy any identified risk.

3. COMMUNICATIONS

  • Communicate and consult with local government agencies on inspection results, corrective actions, and other regulatory issues.
  • Effectively deliver training on the CA hazardous waste program to multiple audiences: ASMs, SMs, DMs, and RDs.
  • Contribute to the “Hazardous Waste Hot Spots” communique.
  • Produce clear, meaningful, grammatically correct written communications.

4. OTHER SKILLS

  • Logical and critical thinking (e.g., identifying data-based trends and issues for stores, gathering information to understand the impact of actions proposed or taken).
  • Research and analytical skills (e.g., queries in vendor databases, accessing online regulatory information and determining what it means for the company)
  • Technical proficiency: basics of Excel and Microsoft Word. Power Point a plus.

5. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in in Safety, Environmental Services or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Safety, Risk Management.
  • Administration of retail compliance programs (in-store and/or corporate).
  • Training, both individual 1:1 and large group.
