Electronics Design Chief Engineer – Space Exploration Electronics Systems (AER0004W5)

From critical systems on the ISS to enable astronauts to live and work in space; to performing advanced development for systems leading to deep space exploration; to being part of the foundation for Gateway.n We also partner with NASA at JSC, the only NASA center in the United States to curate all astromaterial samples returned from exploration missions, to perform curation services, orbital debris analysis, and basic research to further humankind’s understanding of the origins of our solar system.n What you’ll do all day: n As an Electronics Design Chief Engineer
– Space Exploration Electronics Systems you will: Report directly to the Design and Analysis Group Manager.

The position is responsible for the direct management of approximately 50 people involved in various aspects of Electrical System Development across and in support of several NASA Engineering Divisions.

Support new designs from conception, analysis, and manufacturing, through to operational test and deployment.

Provide Technical Leadership for Design Projects.

Establish design development approach and concept for a given project considering requirements, schedule, cost etc.

Work with Design Leads to guide development process.

Work with Design Section Manager and Design Lead in generating design cost estimates and approval process.

Work as a Project Design Lead as required to supplement or replace current design lead function.

Inspire and lead technical innovation amongst design engineers as pertains to design tools and practices.

Work with Design Section Manager to establish best practice design processes and infrastructure.

Mentor and teach Design Leads and engineers in good design practice.

Provide quick technical and administrative response to projects, removing roadblocks to ensure project success and customer satisfaction.

Present design concepts and approaches to customers and project managers as required.

Lead team in anomaly resolution, fault tree development, troubleshooting, and implementation of technical solutions.

Identify, champion and utilize subject matter experts to resolve technical challenges for applicable projects.

Support Design Section Managers and Design Leads in the identification and development of skilled personnel for a given project.

Work with engineers to provide hands-on approach in the hardware design, build and test/verification process.

Conduct design reviews to monitor technical correctness, design project health, and progress.

Develop succession plan mentoring future Chief Engineers and Technical Design Leads.

Demonstrate ability to implement a wide range of technical approaches for the associated design discipline.

Develop technical training modules as required.

Work with Section Manager to ensure the selection of adequate Electronics/Electrical design personnel to accomplish associated tasks.

Perform routine electrical design reviews for cost, schedule, risk management, and deliverable adherence.

Conduct oversight, mentorship and guidance to individual electrical design task leads.

Work with electrical design task leads to track and maintain efficient task performance.

Maintain an active list of lessons learned to actively inform section members.

Provide support to engineering lab manager in maintaining and improving electrical development area.

Maintain active related risk management (technical, cost, and schedule) on all associated design tasks.

Work with colleagues to coordinate issue resolution across multiple JETS organizations which could include source limitations, technical challenges, process breakdowns, etc.

Establish a framework and oversight for technical correctness on all work performed by associated design section.

Understand and be capable of generating comprehensive design concepts based on a given set of requirements.

Provide rough orders of magnitude (ROM’s) and basis of estimates (BOE’s) for project and tasks.

Review, develop or update Electrical Design and Development processes as required.

BS degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited engineering school and a minimum of fourteen (14) years of related engineering experience, or a MS degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited engineering school and a minimum of twelve (12) years of related engineering experience, or Ph.D.

in Electrical Engineering from an accredited engineering school and a minimum of nine (9) years of related experience.

Minimum of 5 years’ experience with NASA/JSC Electrical and Electronics flight intravehicular and extravehicular hardware development processes.

Familiarity with NASA Work Instruction EA-023, JSC Policy Directive 7120 (Class 1E), along with flight hardware certification and other flight hardware processes.

Prior experience with electrical schematic entry and printed circuit board layout tools such as Altium Designer.

Prior experience with FPGA circuitry design and coding in associated complex electronics development environments (such as VHDL, Verilog etc.).

Sound knowledge of and experience in EMI/EMC compliance design and testing per MIL-STD-461 standards.

Familiarity in selection and implementation of Electrical, Electronic and Electromagnetic (EEE) parts in electronics design associated with space flight hardware.

Familiarity with parts selection and electronics design methods for survivability in ionizing radiation environments.

Excellent oral and written communication skills with a history of effectively interacting with senior managers at all levels.

MUST BE A U.S.

Citizen Desired skills and experience for this position: Experience with hardware and FPGA-based development for motor control systems (includes brushless DC or BLDC and stepper motors).

Experience with DC electromechanical power conversion (high power, high performance actuation, electric motors and motor drive electronics, etc.).

Experience with motor controller design, selection and integration with associated mechanisms.

Experience with sensor fusion and fault tolerant control design for robotic actuators.

Understanding of classical and modern control theory.

Prior experience with Robotic Operating System (ROS).

Experience with test hardware such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, logic analyzers, function generators, electronic load banks, power supplies, power analyzers.

Prior experience with microcontroller circuitry design and associated embedded software development environments.

Hands on experience in the design, build, and test of embedded motor control systems.

Prior experience with circuit simulation tools such as Pspice, OrCAD, Multisim etc.

Experience with flex printed circuit board design.

Prior experience with data acquisition systems (especially National Instruments) and LabVIEW code development.

Familiarity with data interface protocols and associated hardware such as Ethernet, RS232, RS422, RS485, I2C, SPI etc.

A successful track record of fielding custom electrical systems in an operational setting.

Experience in the hardware design of embedded systems (microcontrollers, FPGAs, sensor interfaces, I2C/SPI buses, UARTS, etc.) Experience with test hardware such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, logic analyzers, function generators, electronic load banks, power supplies, power analyzers.

Prior experience in design and test of analog instrumentation systems.
