Job Summary:The Landscaping and Irrigation Specialist will perform a wide range of irrigation tasks including repairing, maintaining, and installing sprinkler heads, piping, valves, and electronic controls.
The Landscaping and Irrigation Specialist will engage in landscape projects, maintenance, and repairs, and will set irrigation controllers to optimize irrigation coverage given expected weather conditions, water agency restrictions, and plant health.
Works in partnership with the Maintenance Supervisor, Portfolio Manager, Community Manager, and DJA leadership to “Make it Home” for our residents.Duties/Responsibilities: Operates, maintains, and repairs existing irrigation systems to ensure adequate moisture and soil conditions for plantings.
Sets and maintains automatic irrigation systems to run systematically for best landscaping results.Assists in planting of shrubs and vegetation, and reseeding grass as needed.Assists in caring for trees, shrubs, and flowers by watering, pruning, mulching, caring for beds, and controlling weeds.Designs, installs, tests, and maintains new irrigation systems, backflow devices and controllers.
May provide functional and technical direction to other grounds staff with regard to irrigation systems design, installation and maintenance.Monitors and operates irrigation system.
Replaces hardware as needed for this system (e.G., wires, valves, etc.)Operates special equipment and vehicles to perform the duties of an irrigation specialist and equipment operator with supervision.
May be required to operate trenchers, aerators, lawn rollers, and/or rototillers.Works with Maintenance Supervisor to plan and complete landscape projects at multiple sites.Assists in planning and construction of special landscape projects as assigned.Installs, inspect, and maintains irrigation backflow devices.Orders irrigation supplies, spare parts, and equipment as authorized.
Obtains quotes for services from outside vendors as requested, in compliance with DJA guidelines.Recommends and assists in prioritization of upgrades and replacement of systems and equipment.
Assist in budget preparation related to this work.Responds to work order requests and needs for assistance.Performs specialized tasks during adverse weather conditions.Maintains a safe work environment and performs all duties in a safe manner.
Observes and adhere to all safety rules required by DJA and regulatory agencies.
Reports all safety violations to management immediately.Cleans jobsite at the end of the day, ensuring trash is properly disposed of and materials or equipment are properly stored.Performs routine and preventative maintenance to ensure that we “Make it Home” for our residents.Documents all repairs made on our properties through property management software (AppFolio, Yardi, or Teams).Communicates with all team members using appropriate channels.Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities: Ability to listen to, understand, and follow directions.Ability to remain flexible as specific assignments change.Ability to perform basic arithmetic as needed to count and take inventory.Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with a diverse population.Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in maintaining sustainable landscapes and irrigation systems.Knowledge of and ability to use computerized irrigation control systems (timers).Ability to use a computerized work order system.Ability to use standard office software applications (e.G.
word processing, email, etc.)Excellent organizational and time management skills.Excellent interpersonal and customer services skills.
Education and Experience: Successful completion of vocational school or technical college or apprenticeship program; OR at least three yearsof experience via on-the-job training required.Experience in design, estimation, and installation of new landscapes and irrigation systems.Experience installing sprinkler systems around new structures to assure proper irrigating capacities of the systems.Experience with computerized irrigation control systems (e.G.
timers, control valves, etc.).
Physical Requirements: Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.Must be able to frequently lift and carry gardening equipment and materials up to 50 lbs.Must be able to work in all weather conditions.Must be able to kneel, bend, squat, and reach multiple times a day.Must be able to work some Saturdays and at night when emergencies arise.
