Bilingual Teaching Assistant

REPORTS TO

Building Principal and Instructional Coaches.

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under the supervision of the principal and day-to-day guidance of the Bilingual, ESL and World Language Department and classroom/content area teacher, assists the teachers in establishing and maintaining an efficient and effective classroom by providing students with academic and social-emotional support in daily instructional activities in the student’s native language.

EDUCATION

A minimum of 30 college credits in an education related field is required.

EXPERIENCE

Experience working with school-age students or adolescents is preferred.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

  • Bilingual – Native Spanish or Arabic speaker strongly preferred
  • Strong organizational skills to aid in preparing materials for daily lesson plans and to report out on work.
  • Ability to prioritize activities quickly and support the teacher(s).
  • Literacy, mathematical, and content area skills to assist in teaching.
  • Ability to manage potentially challenging behavior from students and maintain a professional and patient demeanor.
  • Establish, foster and maintain positive cooperative working relationships with students and adults in a learning environment.
  • Basic understanding of childhood and/or adolescent development and steps to support students of various ages and abilities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally or in writing with teachers and parents regarding students’ progress and behavior.
  • Ability to assist students to be active learners.
  • Ability to take direction from supervisors and implement professional learning.
  • Ability to provide functional maintenance activities and to lift, move or reposition students alone or with assistance as required for student needs. Proper training and procedures for these duties will be provided.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with special needs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality as needed.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Effectively communicates, and coordinates with the classroom teacher in order to assist in daily instruction and prepare materials for project-based learning.
  • Ability to work outdoors during student activities when applicable.
  • Provides individual or small group assistance to students to ensure an understanding of concepts.
  • Strictly adheres to the school’s rules and policies.
  • Enforces school safety protocols within the classroom, on field trips, and throughout the campus.
  • Assists the classroom teacher in reviewing, grading, and recording assignments and assessments.
  • Maintains, observes and analyzes each student’s progress through formative assessments and progress- monitoring and is aware of students who need more one-on-one guidance.
  • Provides additional assistance to students who have special needs.
  • Assists teachers in helping students be prepared for instruction and be attentive and focused on lesson objectives and classroom activities.
  • Assists in administering regular assessments to students.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

SALARY & BENEFITS

Pay Rate is based upon college credits completed:

Credit Hours

30 credits – $28.64

60 credits – $29.41

90 credits – $30.19

120 Credits/Bachelor’s Degree – $30.96

  • Non-exempt position.
  • Benefits follow the Local 2407 collective bargaining agreement.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • 7-hour work day, Monday-Friday, 10-month position.
  • Work schedule follows the Local 2407 collective bargaining agreement.
