Job Description

Purpose

To assist the Extrusion Operator in the set up and operation a blown film extruder that produces polyethylene plastic film for customer packaging needs. Assistants may work with one or more Extrusion Operators and share in duties.

II. Duties (Responsible for knowing the content and following all procedures for extrusion operation.)

1. Obtains job information from off-going Assistant Extrusion Operator at the start of the shift, and checks extruder to be sure area is clean.
2. Reads order carefully and thoroughly. Assistant will note any special instructions, roll wrapping guide and question anything that is unclear.
3. Keeps the supply of boxes made up for the next shift.
4. Returns all full glob bins to Repelletizer 4.
5. Assist Extrusion Operator when getting bubble started and changing screens.
6. Assist Extrusion Operator as needed when B.S.S. Liners are running.
7. Temporarily operate equipment as part of training to progress to Extrusion Operator.
8. Checks each roll ticket before wrapping to ensure order numbers are correct and roll numbers are in sequence.
9. Labels cartons with correct order number.
10. Checks skids frequently to ensure the correct type of skid and the correct boxes are being used and band skids as needed.
11. Maintain a clean, safe work area. Sweep, pick up trash and empty trash containers as needed.
12. Maintains self and work area to comply with Good Manufacturing Practices and other prerequisite food safety programs
13. Keep the machine clean, return empty rolling bins to pump station and return unused resin to drop off station in warehouse.
14. Passes job information on to incoming shift Assistant Extrusion Operator.
15. Keeps records as required.
16. Reports malfunctions, damaged or worn out equipment to Crew Leader immediately.
17. Assists in the training of new or inexperienced Assistant Extrusion Operators.
18. All other duties as assigned by Crew Leader or Management.

III. Knowledge

1. Requirements

  • Good computer skills
  • Ability to work with and interact effectively and professionally with coworkers in a team environment
  • Good math skills
  • Must be able to identify the source of problems on complex machinery, and, if noted, take the appropriate corrective action
  • Must be able to read, understand and stay current with all department work instructions and procedures
  • Good organizational skills

2. Sources

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and a minimum of 3 years of experience in printing and/or a manufacturing work environment.

IV. Contacts

1. Internal

  • Has daily contact with Extrusion Department Crew Leaders, hourly production personnel, maintenance, production department management personnel. Must be able to interact with various plant personnel to ensure supplies are available and orders are ready to run as scheduled.

2. External

  • Has occasional contact with customers during customer visits.

V. Responsibility

  • While there is no direct responsibility for major assets or operations in this position, a considerable impact can be made on production, efficiency and waste through effective handling of materials, products, equipment and inventory control.

  • Must be able to communicate with coworkers and Crew Leaders
  • Must pass company administered color vision test
