American Legion Service Officer

Service Officer, Level 1 – Location ANCHORAGE, ALASKA 

The American Legion, Department of Alaska, is seeking a qualified and committed individual be an American Legion Service Office for the Department of Alaska. The American Legion is a non-profit Veterans Service Organization chartered by the US Congress in 1919. It is committed to serving veterans and their families, our local communities, and the United States of America.

Location: 

This vacancy is for the ANCHORAGE Service Office located in the Anchorage Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center at 1201 N. Muldoon Rd, Room 2A-215.

 

Duties:

Service Officer is responsible for a wide range of professional level work to include:

·      Represent The American Legion at Federal, State and community meetings

·      Provide advice and assistance to veterans, to include active duty, National Guard and Reserve military service members, and their family members regarding VA benefits and programs

·      Research, prepare and present written and oral arguments before the Board of Veterans’ Appeals Adjudication Officers

·      May be required to attend/participate in the annual Department Convention (April) and annual Department Fall Conference (October) held within Alaska.

·      Required to attend American Legion training seminars (Washington DC or Indianapolis IN).

·      May be required to attend other meetings/conferences throughout the State.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

The successful applicant will possess the knowledge, skills and abilities gained through education and experience in office administration and customer service. The candidate should possess the following attributes:

·      Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral

·      Strong leadership abilities

·      Ability to apply quality standards effectively

·      Ability to prepare and administer budgets

·      Excellent presentation skills

·      Experienced with common word processing, spreadsheet and presentation computer programs including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

·      Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with executive managers

 

Training pertaining to VA case law and VA benefits programs will be provided either online or through the National American Legion Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation (VA&R) Office during yearly training. Must complete TRIP (Training Response Involvement and Preparation) Training within 21 days of hiring date; training is conducted through an online link.

Special Notes:

  1. This position may require occasional work beyond normal office hours and weekends (comp time must be approved prior to working beyond normal office hours).
  2. Travel by airplane and automobile is required to fulfill the requirements of this position.
  3. The incumbent serves at the direction of The American Legion Department of Alaska Senior Service Officer/Department Adjutant.
  4. Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance coverage.
  5. Must be able to pass a background check (VA requirement).
  6. Must be a current American Legion Family member (Legion, Auxiliary, or Sons of the American Legion-SAL). If not already a member, you must join to be considered for the position).

Selection Process:

The Department Adjutant will appoint a committee to review résumés, select applicants for interview, and conduct the interviews of the candidates. Interviews will be conducted telephonically, in person, or via Zoom.

Compensation

The starting salary for this position is $38,480 per year (non-negotiable), Level 1 Service Officer. There is a 90-day probationary period. Benefits include paid vacation and sick leave which are accrued from the start date, but do not go into effect until the 91st day of employment. We do NOT offer any health benefits.   Moving expenses are NOT authorized.
