The American Academy of Dermatology is seeking a Managing Editor, JAAD Journals located in our Rosemont, IL office responsible for overseeing day-to day operations, as well as the identification and implementation of editorial directives for JAAD Journals portfolio: Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD), JAAD Case Reports (JDCR), and JAAD International (JAADi).
This role is AAD’s knowledge-expert on journal editorial and production practices and is responsible for effectively managing the editorial workflow, production, and on-time publication of the journals.
The duties include managing staff performance and workloads, monitoring manuscript flow and production schedules, setting, and monitoring production standards, and resolving production problems.
This role is also responsible, in collaboration with others, for the development and implementation of journal strategic objectives and tactics to improve the reach and recognition of the JAAD Journals.
This role works to build and strengthen relationships within the journal communities, liaising with journal Editors-in-Chief (EICs), editorial board members (EBMs), and the supporting society (AAD); supports higher-level editorial activities including conflict of interest management and peer review and works out implementation of education, revenue, and business development utilizing journal content.About Us:The American Academy of Dermatology (Academy), founded in 1938, is the largest, most influential, and most representative of all dermatologic associations.

Recruit, train, manage and evaluate editorial staff and work coverage needs.
Develop, implement, and maintain procedures for efficiently coordinating all logistics pertaining to processing, review, and publication of journal manuscripts.
Oversee editorial office work including managing trajectory of submissions for editors; supervising contacts with potential and actual authors; ensuring the smooth flow of manuscripts, reviews, and proofs to authors, reviewers, copy editors, editorial board members, AAD staff, and Publisher.
Oversee the timely publication of manuscripts and ensure that permissions, copyright, and CME compliance is upheld, and all deadlines are met.
Interface with editors and Publisher on production and quality control issues and participate in problem resolution.In collaboration with the Director of Medical Journals Publishing, work with the Editor and Publisher to identify, evaluate and develop new editorial strategies to support and advance the goals and objectives of the journal.
Continuously improve journal processes to ensure that high standards of peer review and other best practices in medical journal publishing are met.
Identify and address ethical issues such as conflicts, authorship disputes, duplicate publication, plagiarism, and falsification of data that may be discovered during editing or production, consulting with appropriate JAAD editors and AAD staff on resolutions.Oversee and participate in the implementation of journal strategic plans.
Help to prioritize activities.
Follow up with EICs on tasks and deadlines.
Manage projects or assign to appropriate editorial staff.
Organize and participate in regular progress meetings.
Lead discussions to refine strategies and activities, looking to maximize the return on each activity through the implementation of SMART goals.
Work with key marketing and communications department staff to promote the journals to the AAD membership, media, and general public.
Provide information and data about the journal for preparation of marketing materials and strategic meetings.
Facilitate staff discussions on how to enhance current and/or develop new programs, editorial formats/features, events, and other strategies to strengthen the journal’s brand, impact factor and member engagement.Manage the editorial process for all journal supplements.
Coordinate with Publisher on editorial and production schedules and respond to issues or concerns from authors, sponsor, editors, and members of the production team in a timely manner.
Liaise with Education Department and Corporate Giving and Revenue on the development of AAD CME supplements.Ensure journal compliance with Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) Essentials, Criteria, Policies, and Standards for Commercial Support for journal CME as defined through AAD policies and procedures.
Oversee editorial team’s work on the preparation of compliance documentation for JAAD and JDCR monthly CME articles.
In cooperation with the Publisher and AAD Education Department, verify that published articles are consistent with ACCME requirements and protocols.Provide direction to editorial office staff and work with the publisher to provide timely and accurate data for regular analytics and trends reports.
Identify and oversee the compilation of data and statistical information about journal editorial performance against defined key performance indicators.
Review information for accuracy and provide reports with analysis/explanation for regular updates on journal activities to all stakeholders.
Provide time sensitive guidance to journal editors and problem resolution on all editorial matters.
Work with Director, editorial office staff, and other stakeholders to identify editorial agenda topics for in-person and phone meetings.
Oversee editorial assistant’s preparation of agendas and dissemination to designated recipients.Develop and maintain an awareness of current issues and best practices in scholarly publishing.
Keep abreast of issues in the academic disciplines covered by the journals.
Develop and maintain methods to assure ongoing assessment of journal compliance with COPE, ICMJE, CSE, WAME, and other accepted scholarly publishing standards.Assist in the development of annual journal reports, as well as the annual budget, monitor expenses, and assist with review of monthly variance reports.
Process and manage journal budget expenditures, including editor honoraria payments.
Regularly assess resource needs, and promptly communicate those needs to the Director of Medical Journals Publishing.Administer the JAAD Editorial Mentorship Program.
Coordinate annual program enrollment and provide candidates to the Editor and Program Chair for approval.
Ensure mentees are appointed a mentor and are receiving manuscripts from their mentors for review each month.
Compile and report all requested program metrics to the Editor and the Program Chair.
Survey program participants annually and update the program as appropriate according to findings.Requirements:Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field.
Prefer Master’s degree.Minimum ten years demonstrated experience in scholarly journal management for a medical society.Expertise in digital publishing and print production processes, as well as extensive knowledge of copyright, open access, authorship, conflict of interest management, and peer review is required.Experience with journal CME compliance is preferred.Strong writing, editing, analysis, and project management skills essential.
Must have effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication and organizational skills.Must work well independently, meeting all deadlines.
Must be proficient in Chicago, AMA, and AP Style.Ability to execute projects with minimal supervision.
Proficient in Microsoft Office.
