Duties

The following are the duties of this position at the full working level. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

  • Evaluate all available information and take corrective actions, such as credit transfers requests, re-computed tax, and/or penalty and interest.
  • Access relevant systems to view and/or update taxpayers’ accounts regarding payments received, review status of the case, and/or to make account adjustments.
  • Enter data into automated system to adjust tax, penalty, and/or credit adjustments.
  • Recognize indications of tax fraud; make determinations and use sound judgment concerning taxpayers’ data and responses.
  • Gain cooperation of taxpayers by explaining the best options available to resolve the problem or question, mutual interests, and to make sure they understand their responsibilities.
  • Interpret the law as it relates to the issues and if affects the performance and efficiency of the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Educate taxpayers on action(s) needed to achieve compliance with tax filing/liabilities.

Qualifications

Federal experience is not required. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis. You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:

GS-04 Level: General experience and/or education equivalent to one (1) year or twelve months of general experience equal to the next lower grade (GS-03) in the Federal government. General experience – Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular competencies needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. This may be paid or non-paid experience.

OR

EDUCATION: Two (2) years of education above the high school level. Education may have been obtained in an accredited junior college, college, university, business, secretarial or technical school.

GS-05 Level:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that is related to the work of this position and has provided you with the competencies required for successful job performance. Examples of qualifying experience include experience performing a variety of miscellaneous tasks involving researching and processing financial documents, reviewing information and determining corrective action on accounts, researching for missing/unclear accounting information and reviewing financial documents submitted for completeness.

EDUCATION: You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: Completed four (4) years above high school in any field, in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.

Additional information

There are limited full-time permanent positions and the majority will be filled on full-time seasonal work schedules.

Tour of Duty: Shifts vary by location. We will try to offer the shift of your preference, but you may be offered an alternate shift upon selection. The actual Tour of Duty will be defined at job offer.

  • Day Shift – Monday-Friday Start and stop times between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
  • Swing Shift – Monday-Friday Start and stop times between 2:00 p.m. and 1:30 a.m.
  • Night Shift – Monday-Friday Start and stop times between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

Work Schedule: There is not a guarantee you will be selected for the work schedule you prefer. If selected on a seasonal work schedule, the season is either 3-5 months, 4-6 months, or 6-8 months determined upon selection.

There is not a guarantee you will be selected for the Business Unit Division you prefer as not all locations are in both divisions.

May be eligible for telework based on IRS policy. Must meet eligibility requirements.

If you are in a telework eligible position, you may be directed to temporarily telework on a full-time basis due to COVID 19. Employees must be within a 150-mile radius of their official assigned post-of-duty (POD) while in a telework status. Once normal operations resume, employees may be directed back to the office to perform the duties of their position. Telework eligibility does not guarantee telework; employees must meet and sustain IRS telework eligibility requirements and supervisor’s approval to participate in the IRS Telework Program. As a reminder – If you are selected for a position, you are responsible for reporting to your designated POD (location) on the negotiated start date or as directed by management.
