Range Technician/Test Engineer

Bowhead / UIC Technical Services

This is a Full-time position in Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD posted September 15, 2021.

DescriptionRange Technician/Test Engineer (ARL-21-1259-F):Bowhead has an immediate opening for a Range Technician/Test Engineer to join the Army Research Laboratory team in Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.

Range Technician/Test Engineer performs more complex engineering support assignments.

Constructs and builds devices and simple equipment following layouts and diagrams.

Conducts tests and experiments.

Extracts and complies data from field notes, manuals, reports and tests.

Diagnoses causes of malfunctions or failures and performs preventive/corrective maintenance.

Records data, recommends modification or replacement of failed equipment.Performs non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity, using operational precedents which are not fully applicable.

Such assignments, which are typically parts of broader assignments, are screened to eliminate unusual design problems.

May also plan such assignments.

Receives technical advice from supervisor or engineer; work is reviewed for technical adequacy (or conformity with instructions).

May be assisted by lower level technicians and have frequent contact with professionals and others within the establishment.Performs at this level one or a combination of such typical duties as:
• Conducts tests or experiments requiring selection and adaptation or modification of a wide variety of critical test equipment and test procedures; sets up and operates equipment; records data, measures and records problems of significant complexity that sometimes require resolution at a higher level; and analyzes data and prepares test reports.
• Applies methods outlined by others to limited segments of research and development projects; constructs experimental or prototype models to meet engineering requirements; conducts tests or experiments and redesigns as necessary; and records and evaluates data and reports findings.
• Sets up experimental facility for a variety of experiments, including small, medium, and large caliber cannons and/or high explosive warheads to conduct terminal ballistic experiments.

Sets up target, cannon/gun, and diagnostic equipment according to test plan and performs simple troubleshooting/correction actions, as necessary.

Diagnostic equipment includes 150-450 kV flash x-ray systems, high voltage power supplies, high speed cameras, pressure transducers, breakscreens, and counters.

Identifies correct targets and takes hardness, dimension, and mass measurements prior to and/or after test.

Builds both routine and new fixtures for experiments.

Assists with gun installation and trains as/serves as gunner and explosives operator, as required.

Collects diagnostic media after test and prepares it for data reduction.

Cleans facility and prepares it for next test.
• Correctly loads film into x-ray cassettes.

Properly places cassettes in experimental facility according to test plan.

Develops film after tests, reads/digitizes results, and scans it using appropriate hardware according to test plan/project engineer, as required.

Is proficient in operating and collecting images and data from digital high speed cameras, pressure transducers, and digital counters.

Reports any problems to senior technicians/facility manager.
• Records all applicable and specified setup and experimental data onto appropriate form or notebook; enters some data into electronic file format, which is either a standard used at the facility or one provided by project engineer.

Reviews data entries for errors or inconsistencies.

Recognizes the value and records/uses field notes for complex experimental setups and procedures.

Uses judgment and initiative to recognize inconsistencies or gaps in data and seek sources to clarify information.
• Uses appropriate tools, equipment, and lifting equipment to accomplish tasks; works independently and only requests guidance from senior technician or facility manager on rare occasions if unsure.

Is properly trained, qualified, and licensed to use forklifts, cranes, tractors, and transport vehicles.
• Construction of special target fixtures, gun mounting systems and other ancillary devices to help make perform the required tests more efficiently.
• Follows appropriate standard operating procedures and adheres to applicable safety and security practices.

Practices good housekeeping at working facility to ensure that all procedures and practices are maintained, including periodic cleaning of experimental facilities, offices, and storage areas.
• Is certified as a Small Caliber Gunner, Large Caliber Gunner, Explosives Operator, as well as an Indoor Test Director.
• Maintains and operates the Water Evaporator system at EF9, following all applicable guidelines.
• Must make smooth transitions between large and small caliber operations, seamlessly transitioning without compromising any data collection.
• Trained and IAM approved Power User for both classified and unclassified computer system for both small and large caliber testing equipment allowing for greater flexibility with data collection and data reduction.

Reduces downtime when dealing with connectivity and program errors in the system.
• Certified laser worker & PDV operator via Radiation Safety Office.
• Work to become a Trained and Certified PowerMax X-Ray operator.
• Support other branch’s ranges working with explosives due to adapting to different range environments and testing configurations.
• Works with depleted uranium and wears appropriate PPE; certified to wear full-face/PAPR respirator; certified as Unrestricted Radiation worker within the EF9 complexRequirements
• HS diploma and 5+ years of related experience
• Security Clearance is required
– candidate does not have to have a current one but must be able to obtain one.
• Current State Driver’s License with the ability to gain certification to drive and operate government owned vehicles and equipment.
• Basic computer proficiency in word processing and spreadsheets preferred.SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Secret level.

Prepossessing an active Secret Clearance is preferred.

US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.Applicants may be subject to a pre-employment drug & alcohol screening and/or random drug screen, and must follow UIC’s Non-DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
