Metals Prep Lab Technician

North Water District Laboratory Services

This is a Contract position in Conroe, TX posted January 22, 2022.

NWDLS, Inc is looking for an entry level Metals Prep technician to assist in the preps of samples using standard analytical techniques in compliance with NWDLS’ Quality Assurance programs and SOP’s. This individual should feel comfortable working in a lab setting and around chemicals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Performs routine lab tasks that provide experience and familiarization with methods, practices, and programs including:

o Batching and prepping samples using standard techniques for analysis by ICP and/or ICP-MS

o Performing chemical analysis using standard techniques

o Making reagents for sample analysis

o Preparing appropriate standards to ensure compliant data

o Operation, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory instruments

o Calculating data

o Conforming to lab QA/QC practices

o Assist in analytical method development for specialized testing procedures

· Uploads data into laboratory information management system (LIMS).

· Responsible for general housekeeping in his/her work area.

· Works under close supervision using routine and standard methods.

· Accurate, timely, and complete analysis must be provided on all samples to ensure data quality and to maintain positive client relations.

· Assists in other areas of the laboratory when needed and can become trained and competent on complex instrumentation including any but not limited to gas chromatography, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, and instrument specific data systems.

Desired Skills and Experience

Requirements

· Education

o BS/BA degree in chemistry or related field.

· Experience

o Laboratory experience required, Environmental Laboratory experience preferred.

o Previous production-oriented work helpful (awareness and ability to meet deadlines).

o Experience with Promium Element is desired but not required.

· Knowledge

o Analytical and/or General Science

o Scientific methods and method compliance

o Strong mathematics background

o Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures

o Knowledge of laboratory procedures

o Skilled with computers and laboratory software

o Laboratory safety rules and chemical hazards

o Word processing and working with spreadsheets

· Abilities

o Use calculator/mathematical formulas and concepts of Chemistry

Physical Requirements

· Vision enough to read and interpret chemical and reagent labels, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, laws, spreadsheets, computer screens and print outs, business correspondence, and other documents encountered in the course of work.

· Hearing enough to hear conversation levels in person and telephone.

· Speech enough to make oneself heard and understood in front of groups, over the telephone, in meetings, and training sessions.

· Mobility enough to safely move in an environmental laboratory.

· Dexterity enough to safely operate office equipment including computers and specialized tools and equipment utilized in the course of work.

· Strength enough to safely lift and carry sample containers, office supplies, materials, equipment, and other related materials weighing up to 30 pounds.

· Endurance enough to stand and bend from the waist for longs periods; maintain efficiency throughout entire shift.

Work Environment

· Primarily in a climate-controlled office setting within the laboratory.
Involves exposure to odors, fumes, hazardous chemicals, and acids requiring the use of safety gear.
