Vision Dermatology
We are seeking a motivated, smart and highly organized individual for a position in our lab as a Mohs histotechnician.
Specific experience as a histotechnician is not required but applicants must have prior lab experience.
The selected candidate will be trained to be proficient in all aspects of the job.
Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in Biology or Chemistry.
Applicant must be interested in growing with the practice.
We have a great work culture, with terrific co-workers with many staff returning after completing additional education.
Job hours part-time: Monday
– Wednesday 8:30 AM
– 1:30 PM.
If desired working Monday
– Thursday could also be an option.
Mohs Histotechnician Job Description: Raleigh Skin Surgery Center
I.
Description of Job: Under supervision of the Mohs surgeon, obtain, cut and stain surgical specimens according to Mohs technique.
Obtain slides from outside labs as necessary and maintain records of all tissue and slides which come into and leave our laboratory.
Maintain database of all patients and generate operative notes and letters to referring physicians for each surgery.
Reports to office manager.
II.
Specific Duties:
1.
Prepare and maintain solutions and stains; map and chromacode tissue specimens according to Mohs technique; cut horizontal frozen sections and prepare microscopic slides; dispose of tissue according to accepted practice.
2.
Maintain quality control on all slides processed.
Label, file and store Mohs (histological) slides, submit all slides to pathologist for confirmation of diagnosis; distribute pathology reports according to established procedure; keep records as to the whereabouts of all slides in our possession; order and return slides to outside laboratories or offices.
3.
Perform data entry of surgical information on all patients.
Generate surgery notes and letters to referring physicians.
4.
Create and maintain accurate files and logs for departmental records, entering, updating and/or recording information accurately and in a timely manner.

Maintain records of total cases, excisions, etc, for quality assurance
5.
Monitor inventory levels of supplies and equipment on a regular basis.
Order supplies for the laboratory.
Maintain log of supplies as they are ordered.
Receive and check lab shipments to ensure accuracy and quality of stock.
Organize stock and equipment in a systematic and accessible fashion.
6.
Maintain and operate laboratory and surgical equipment, including cryostat; perform routine preventative maintenance of equipment.
Maintain cryostat according to OSHA standards.
7.
Interact with patients in a cheerful and supportive manner.
8.
Provide emergency assistance as required and/or directed by the appropriate authority or emergency team leader.
9.
Cross-train in other job duties of the clinic, including but not limited to medical/surgical assistant and billing surgical coordinator.
10.
Maintain confidentiality and privileged communications related to the patient.
11.
Must be proficient in use of all applications of Microsoft Office.
12.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
III.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree required (Biology or Chemistry, preferred).
Knowledge of medical terminology a plus.
Prior histotech-related experience, preferred but applicant, if hired, will be trained in all aspects of this job.
Pleasant personality for handling telephone and patient contact required.
IV.
Physical Demands:
Must have good physical stamina; be able to be on feet most of the day.
Able to squat and/or stoop to lift at least 25-pounds.
Must have sufficient arm, wrist, and finger dexterity to cut tissue using a cryostat.

Characteristics and Abilities:
Able to follow verbal and written instructions.
Able to work in fast-paced office with heavy telephone, talking, and frequent interruptions.
Able to deal tactfully with patients who are ill and may have functional problems.
VII.
Working Conditions:
Inside under normal temperatures, with adequate light, ventilation, and space.
Works mostly with alone, occasionally with others.
Moderate noise from equipment and interaction with patients.
