General Summary:Maintain and service tractors and/or trailers at prescribed intervals making repairs toequipment as necessary in a safe, timely and cost effective manner.
Complete andmaintain all service and maintenance records.
Properly clean all trailers, tractors andperipheral equipment to meet company and customer standards for quality control.Perform various forms of welding, brazing and cutting using gas and electric weldingequipment.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:1.
Inspect and service tractors and/or trailers at prescribed intervals.2.
Make all repairs to tractors and/or trailers as necessary for safe operation.3.
Complete and maintain records of service, maintenance, costs and inspections.4.
Follow company guidelines in regards to acceptable conduct when dealing withsupervisors, shop personnel, drivers, and customers projecting an image ofquality and professionalism at all times.5.
May be on call evenings and weekends in rotation.6.
Receive instructions, prints and work orders for jobs.
Plan details of workingprocedure, tools and material requirements.7.
Comply with all company programs, procedures, and policies, including:a.
Safety policies and directives.b.
Tank Entry Programs and policies.c.
Respiratory Protection Programs and policies.d.
Cleaning requirements and Standards of Service.8.
Test drive tractors and other vehicles for diagnostic purposes.9.
If hired as a CDL :a.
On a substitute basis, drive vehicles with gross weight ratings of 10,001or more pounds (CMVs), transporting freight across state lines orotherwise in interstate commerce.b.
Perform road tests by taking CMVs being repaired out on the interstateto diagnose mechanical problems and/or determine if the previouslydiagnosed mechanical problems have been fixed.c.
Perform road calls by delivering an operating CMV to a driver whoseCMV has broken down, fix the broken vehicle and drive it back to thefacility.
These CMVs should reasonably be expected to be carryingfreight being transported in interstate commerce.
Road calls may alsorequire a mechanic to retrieve broken CMvs, carrying freight and returnthem to the facility.
Knowledge and Skills Required :1.
CDL is required if driving tractor/trailer or bobtail tractor on a public road for anyreason.2.
Must have valid driver’s license if leaving the premises on any company-relatedbusiness in any vehicle.
MVR will be reviewed.3.
Must be able to safely operate a tractor/trailer unit within the terminal premises.4.
Must be able to meet the brake inspection requirements stipulated in section396.25 of the federal motor carrier safety regulations.5.
Must be able to diagnose mechanical, electrical or other failure to a tractor ortrailer.6.
Must be able to read, write and understand the English language to the extentnecessary to familiarize self with company policy, state and federal rules andregulations; to comprehend technicalmanuals; to properly complete all repairand maintenance reports.

Must be able to read and interpret precision instruments such as oxygenexplosion meter and thickness gauges.8.
Must be able to work efficiently and safely, both within the shop area and whenmaking a road call.9.
Minimum of 3 years’ verifiable experience in diesel repair or trailer repairpreferred.10.
When applicable, must have welding skills and knowledge of metals to completetractor or trailer repairs.11.
Complete formal apprenticeship program or in-company 3 year training program.
Physical Demands: 1.
Must be able to grasp, lift and properly use all power and hand tools.2.
Must be able to stand for extended periods of time on a concrete floor.3.
Must be able to walk, bend, reach, kneel, and crawl in order to inspect and repairtractors/trailers.4.
Must be able to lift up to and sometimes in excess of 100 pounds.5.
Must wear protective / safety gear in marked areas.6.
If hired as CDL and / or if the employee is expected to operate acommercial motor vehicle (GVWR over 10,001 lbs) must meet the minimum medicalqualification standards of the DOT under 49 CFR Part 391, including the minimumvision and hearing requirements and the DOT drug testing requirements.7.
If #6 does not apply, must be able to pass a fitness for duty test and a preemployment federal drug screen.
