Drone Pilot Survey TechnicianReports To: Field Survey SupervisorSUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:The Drone Pilot Survey Technician provides aerial survey support to all current and future clients of BHI utilizing LiDAR, Thermal and RGB methods. Travel is an essential function of this position and at times overnight stays in area of assigned work will be required. Candidate must hold a valid Drivers License for the duration of the job. A clean driving record is a requirement and will be reviewed during background checks.Under the direct supervision of the Field Survey Supervisor, the drone pilot survey technician will collect data from transmission and distribution power lines, poles, and other related equipment.The incumbent takes essential pictures that capture pole framing, attachments, conductor sizes, and all other equipment to be utilized for visual details while mapping the GIS. Technician will be required to process all obtained data and publish it to the SharePoint for all to see. Technician will also be trained to map the database utilizing collected data during times of no survey requirements from the client. This position will also potentially be trained in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) as a side function. To apply for this position, you must have your Remote Pilot Certificate (FAA Part 107 license) and documented flight hours.WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR DRONE PILOTS FOR NORTHEAST LOCATIONS BASED OUT OUR GLASTONBURY, CT OFFICE. Work locations will include CT, MA, NH, NY and ME.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Perform pre-flight checks of drone and equipmentExperience with FAA (Requesting COAs, COW, LAANC, etc)Two way communication with towerOversee ground and flight operationsAnalyze weather forecasts to ensure safe flightPlan, request, and fly flight routesGather all required information (photographs, thermo, LiDAR, etc) with a variety of dronesEnsure compliance with all FAA regulations and certifications as requiredRead GIS maps, manipulate pole placement and cleanup client’s GIS databaseTravel to all areas under client’s ownership as requiredUnderstands and uses detailed distribution maps provided by clientUtilizes a computer tablet and related applications to survey poles for correct framing, conductor sizes and other related equipmentCollects data using range finders, measuring wheels, communication sticks, multimeters, and other field equipmentUtilize GPR devices for underground utility locating for all potential clients* Pending trainingResponsible for the quality control/quality assurance on project deliverablesOTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Completes vehicle inspection checklists and returns them to the responsible administrative assistant on a daily basisPlaces cones, beacon, and other safety measures around vehicles as part of site safetyCompletes a site safety check and safety pre job briefing to include all personnel at the siteCompletes a ride-out checklist prior to any task requiring vehicle usageStay up to date on news and changes in the survey industry for potential opportunitiesKNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / COMPETENCIES:Team player with well-developed interpersonal skills who is comfortable in a cross-functional, multi-cultural environmentGood decision making, analytical, and problem-solving abilitiesStrong communication and writing skills with the ability to clearly explain issuesAbility to manage own time as best suited for the tasks at handKnowledge of easement, right-of-way, and permit documents is preferredSmart phone usage with a variety of appsAbility to take pictures and upload/scan pictures and forms to a specified data driveKnowledge of proper safety practicesAbility to meet critical due datesAbility to walk outside for extended periodsAbility to lift all required equipment for assigned taskAbility and desire to learn new survey processes used to complete survey projectsSCHEDULE: Schedule varies based on work assigned.Typically, 10-hour days Mon-ThursPotential for 12-hour daysRECOMMENDED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:The ideal candidate will have a High School Diploma or GED.FAA Part 107 License required. Must have documented flight hours.Previous Utility experience with low altitude and line of sight flight preferred.Previous electrical experience preferred.Knowledge of and/or expertise in field work techniques and data collection through use of drones.Able to create and read detailed distribution maps using GIS software, as well as take detailed field notes for data collection and transfer the data to the computer.Experience with GPS to document features, work locations, and transects. Able to use a Tablet/PC and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Adobe Pro.Able to write work summary reports using Microsoft Word.Able to take pictures of poles and identify framing and equipment on the poles.Experience with cameras and range finders.Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain it throughout the duration of employment.Ability to work in a team environment with a high attention to safety guidelines.Must be able to work extended periods of time on a computer.Ability to focus on quality and attention to detail, work independently and think analytically.Possess excellent oral and written communication skills
