Member of Technical Staff – Plastic Design / Tooling Project Lead – WA

OPEX Corporation is currently looking for a full-time plastic specialist to focus on Robotic Product Development to work at our World Headquarters in Moorestown, NJ. This position reports to Mechanical Design Engineering – Robotic Product Development Manager.
Responsibilities
The plastic specialist will be set up for success by teaming with Product Management and other engineers toward designing and creating best-in-class solutions for customers. This role will collaborate with mechanical engineering, seek out their input, and strive for design consensus toward meeting product development goals. Early product development will be guided by the design and building of prototypes, proof-of-concept (POC), and minimal viable products (MVP) as defined by Product Management. The plastic specialist must be able to contribute to or lead the delivery of complex production-level plastic designs for new products and support those new products through production and customer adoption.
This role will also be expected to:
- Evaluate plastic parts from mechanical engineers and designers, with occasional plastic part design, including creation of professional-quality product drawings.
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience in injection molding. A solid skill set in plastic part design, plastic materials, and mold design, (2 plate, 3 plate, multicavity, family molds vs. single cavity, cost efficiency, etc.)
- Low to medium volume domestic production of parts, large ton molds, and small ton molds. Must be able to deal with multiple projects, varying volume of parts, and have or develop a good repour with multiple vendors.
- Experience with Moldflow a plus.
Specific to Injection Molding Applications:
- Design and document engineering solutions, including cost, fabrication.
- Provide guidance to Mechanical Design and Engineering resources.
- Present, discuss, and review engineering specifications & solutions.
- For awarded programs, act as subject matter expert supporting development.
- Work with suppliers to develop solutions, tooling and processes while controlling costs.
- Support in-house manufacturing, production, and assembly departments from proof-of-concept (POC) phase through production stabilization.
- Commit to all safety and compliance standards, regulations, and requirements
- Troubleshoot and resolve design and molding challenges as well as operating deficiencies.
- Provide clear, concise, accurate and timely verbal and written updates to project and department management.
- Working with minimum supervision, take ownership of tasks from start to finish.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Minimum 5+ years of Solid Modeling experience (AutoCad and/or Autodesk Inventor a plus)
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and how to design to best leverage them as it pertains to injection molding.
- Comfortable working on cross-functional teams of Product Management, Project Management, and cross-functional Engineering teams.
- Demonstrated engineering creativity, entrepreneurial spirit, and ability to prioritize & multi-task.
- Strong team player and comfortable providing guidance to engineers and designers.
- Demonstrated ability to own an assignment and see it through to completion.
- Skilled in the areas of schedule and cost estimation.
- A keen design eye and experience reviewing others’ design work as it pertains to the injection molding process.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to travel when necessary ( less than 5%) visiting vendors, etc.
