The Collins Aerospace Mission System Advanced Technology group is seeking candidates for an opening in the Immersive and Autonomous Systems group for a Senior Software Engineer in the domain of Uncrewed A e rial Systems (UAS), with a specific focus on the eme rging domains of UAS Traffic Management (U TM ) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM) .

With the emergence of UAS and UAM, the airspace is seeing a rapid exp an sion of new types of vehicles , with increasing levels of autonomy using the airspace in a variety of n ovel ways.

From drones capable of beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) railway inspections, to flying ta xis, UAS and UAM represent a simultaneous revolution in nearly every aspect of aviation .

As part of the subset of those at Collins who track and innovates to solve these challenges, this position offers an opportunity to grow with this emerging domain .

Primary Responsibilities:

  • As a part of the IAS group , a candidate will be part of a research and development organization in charge of conceptualizing, implementing , demonstrating, and maturing new technologies and ideas in a wide variety of topics .

  • Candidates should be well rounded self
    – starters with a passion for innovation who can understand challenging concepts, create requirements to address and implement solutions in software.

  • This position requires working directly with NASA, the FAA, as well as international airspace authorities as well as customers as we participate in research and early-stage concept development, demonstration, and maturation activities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of prior relevant experience OR

  • Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience OR

  • In absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience is required

  • Engineering/Other Technical Positions: Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.

  • Strong c ommunications skills relevant for participating in a diverse and distributed team, interfacing with customers , research partners, and relevant airspace regulators as well as participating in concept demonstrations and other presentations.

  • Experience in web development, with an ability to excel in a full stack environment with interfaces to many external systems .

    Preferably with familiarity with Angular

  • Strong aptitude for programming in a variety of languages and environments including:

  • Web development: Python, TS, HTML, CSS, SQL

  • Scripting and server environments: Shell /Python scripting

  • Basic understanding of IP networks

  • Must Be a U.S.

    Citizen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with version control (GIT preferred)

  • Familiarity with handling, processing, and efficient queries relating to geographic information systems (GIS) data and common geospatial tools ( e.g.

    ArcGIS, Shapely, etc )

  • General proficiency in Linux-based server environments

  • Embedded environments: C/C++

  • Familiarity with continuous development and deployment

  • Background in aviation, ideally UAS and or air traffic control

  • Experience with software in the loop (SITL) or other simulation techniques

  • Familiarity with web development concepts, tools, and frameworks such as Angular, Docker, RabbitMQ, Kubernetes, RESTful interfaces, Flask, POSTMAN, jQuery, OpenAPI , experience with websockets , Nginx, etc .

  • Machine Learning concepts and experience

  • Ability to support occasional travel
