Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a world-class research institution powered by a highly educated, diverse workforce committed to the values of Integrity, Creativity, Collaboration, Impact, and Courage.
Every year, scores of dynamic, driven people come to PNNL to work with renowned researchers on meaningful science, innovations and outcomes for the U.S.
Department of Energy and other sponsors; here is your chance to be one of them!At PNNL, you will find an exciting research environment and excellent benefits including health insurance, flexible work schedules and telework options.
PNNL is located in eastern Washington State—the dry side of Washington known for its stellar outdoor recreation and affordable cost of living.
The Lab’s campus is only a 45-minute flight (or ~3 hour drive) from Seattle or Portland, and is serviced by the convenient PSC airport, connected to 8 major hubs.**Overview**Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s works to improve the security, stability, and resiliency of our nation’s energy infrastructure; increase transparency and flexibility; reduce inefficiencies; and improve the nation’s general quality of life.
We tackle systems as small as heat pumps that can fit into the palm of your hand to as large as control and architectural paradigms spanning supply and demand of the U.S.
electrical grid.To do this, the Distributed Systems Group at PNNL develops integrated systems to monitor, diagnose, and understand the operating state of the most complex engineered processes in the world.
These processes range from electrical and thermal power generation, to transmission and distribution and to the end use consumption of energy in industrial and residential facilities. This position focuses on leading and developing new distributed systems research that explores integration of new information and communication technologies with advanced distributed controls and coordination schemes to accelerate transformation of the nation’s energy infrastructure to a secure, resilient, and decarbonized future.**Responsibilities**+ Researches, develops, designs, and tests large, IoT scale, distributed electrical/electronic, telecommunication, software systems, as well as their operations and control with related optimization techniques.+ Identifies system requirments and develops system architectures of large distributed systems including electric power and telecommunication system components and controls, software and embedded firmware components and there secure management, compute elements spanning cloud to edge, and all associated interfaces.+ Adapts and applies information theory, communication theory, and control theory to design intelligent energy systems with desired behaviors..+ Determines design approaches and parameters.
