– Georgetown UniversityThe Office of Research Oversight (ORO) reflects Georgetown University’s ongoing commitment to consolidate and harmonize research compliance activities across all campuses.
Reporting jointly to the Medical Center Dean for Research and to the Main Campus Vice Provost for Research, ORO’s activities
– which include the Office of Research Quality Assurance (ORQA)
– are primarily concentrated in the areas of conflict of interest, export controls, research misconduct, and responsible conduct of research.
ORO’s mission is to facilitate basic science research and protect the safety and welfare of human subjects participating in research and clinical trials by ensuring that all activities are conducted in a legally and ethically compliant environment.The Research Compliance Officer, under the supervision of the ORO’s Senior Director and the Deputy Conflict of Interest Officer, administers the Main Campus and Medical Center’s conflict of interest requirements in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, University and Medical Center policies and practices.
They serve as the primary contact for Research Development Services (RDS), Office of Sponsored Research (GUMC), Office of Research Services (Main Campus), and the IRB regarding financial disclosures related to proposals, awards, and IRB protocols for clinical trials and other research studies involving human subjects; prepare conflict management plans for execution by researchers, advise the Institutional Review Boards (“IRB”) of required consent form modifications and restrictions on the conduct of the research; submit initial and updated reports to federal agencies as necessary to comply with federal COI rules and regulations; and track all investigator COIs, conflict management plans (CMPs) and monitor investigator compliance with the terms of the CMP.
The Research Compliance Officer has duties include but are not limited to:IRB* Review all IRB human subject and clinical trial protocols to identify drugs or devices being evaluated and their manufacturers; compare the manufacturers to the financial disclosures of each investigator to determine whether any conflicts require management or whether the consent form requires updated language; and prepare requisite conflict management plans.* Communicate with investigators, study coordinators, and IRB staff as needed to ensure that all regulatory requirements are met.Conflict ReviewsConduct conflict reviews related to outgoing Main Campus and Medical Center proposals and incoming awards, ensuring that all conflicts are managed, CITI conflict of interest training has been completed within the requisite timeline, and that reports have been submitted to external sponsors in accordance with federal and other sponsor regulations.Institutional Conflict of InterestParticipate in institutional conflict of interest oversight committee meetings, assisting with the collection, consolidation and summarizing of reports, and preparing meeting summaries.Qualifications* Bachelor’s degree* 3 to 5 years of experience in an academic medical center, preferably in the areas of conflict of interest, research compliance, or research administration* Ability to work independently with accuracy and attention to detail* Ability to understand, interpret, and synthesize federal and state laws and regulations* Ability to understand and communicate with regard to financial and business dealings involving faculty and the University* Ability to understand and work with biomedical and social and behavioral grant applications;* Ability to apply legal and University requirements, policies and practices;* Ability to pivot between multiple projects simultaneously* Strong communication and social skills to facilitate positive interactions among a diverse range of expectations and points of viewPreferred qualificationsMaster’s degreeCurrent Georgetown Employees:If you currently work at Georgetown University, please exit this website and login to GMS (gms.georgetown.edu) using your Net ID and password.
