Research Associate

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

This is a Full-time position in Chicago, IL posted December 5, 2021.

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s ( LBNL ) Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology Division has an opening for a Research Associate to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will assist in developing novel synthetic biology tools for use in plants.

You will utilize standard laboratory microbiology techniques, molecular biology, and modern DNA assembly methods to generate DNA constructs.

You will also be responsible for growth and maintenance of model plants (primarily tobacco), and Agrobacterium mediated plant transformation of synthetic biology constructs.

You will be expected to analyze experimental results, generate reports, and present findings at group meetings.

What You Will Do:

  • Growth and maintenance of model plants, primarily tobacco.
  • Agrobacterium mediated transformation of model plants to evaluate synthetic biology constructs.
  • Various molecular biology techniques including PCR, cloning, bacterial transformation, and gel electrophoresis.
  • Keep accurate records of all work performed.
  • Participate in group meetings and seminars.
  • Maintain careful records of all experiments.
  • Analyze research data, organize data for publication, and prepare research presentations and publications.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering, Biomolecular Engineering, Microbiology, Plant Biology, or related area preferred and up to a few years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques: PCR, bacterial transformation, large, small and scale DNA purification, restriction digest, gel electrophoresis.
  • Ability to learn new laboratory protocols and technologies.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational, writing and record-keeping skills.
  • Good analytical skills to effectively evaluate data and make recommendations.
  • Excellent and effective interpersonal communication and presentation skills; ability to interact collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organization.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Bioengineering, Biomolecular Engineering, or related area.
  • Experience in growing and maintaining tobacco.
  • Experience with Agrobacterium mediated transformation of tobacco.

Notes:

  • This is a full time 1 year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
  • This position may be subject to a background check.
