The laboratory of Dr.

Dan Perrien has an immediate opening for a Lead Research Specialist.

Dr.

Perrien’s lab, in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Lipids, uses genetically modified mice, cell culture, and molecular techniques to understand regulators of a rare musculoskeletal disease, including BMP signaling and immune interactions with bone cells.

The candidate must have demonstrated experience with animal handling, in vivo imaging, PCR, RT-qPCR, flow cytometry/FACS, and cell culture.

Position requires rodent handling.

Experience in the field of bone biology or immunology is not necessary but would be advantageous.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.
  • Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques.
  • May assist in protocol design.
  • Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.
  • Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.
  • Analyzes and interprets results of studies.
  • Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings.
  • Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards.
  • Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.
  • Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

Job Duties:

  • Design and write experimental protocols under the direction of the PI and accurately document all laboratory activities
  • Report data to the PI in written, graphical, and oral communications.
  • Conduct studies in mice including breeding, genotyping, injections, gavage, minor surgery, and necropsy
  • Perform x-ray imaging and other imaging of live rodents
  • Ex vivo analyses of tissues including histology, immunohistochemistry, and protein and mRNA extractions and analyses.
  • Conduct tissue culture studies using primary and transformed cells
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Maintain chemical and biological inventory and safety documentation
  • Train or assist in training of new students and staff
  • Most duties will be performed on a semi
    – to fully-independent basis

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Education: BA/BS in Biological Sciences or closely related field
  • 4 years of biomedical research experience
  • Willingness to work with rodents in a laboratory setting
  • At least 3 years of experience handling small laboratory animals
  • Some experience with tissue culture
  • Experience with PCR and other standard laboratory techniques
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others in a positive and productive manner
  • Willingness to perform some weekend and afterhours

Any combination of the following skills/experience would be advantageous:

  • Management of genetically modified mouse colonies, including genotyping and husbandry
  • Flow cytometry
  • qPCR/RT-qPCR
  • Histological staining and analysis using brightfield and/or epifluorescence
  • In vivo imaging of live rodents using any modality
  • Small animal necropsy and surgery
  • Western blot
  • IHC and/or ISH
  • Site directed mutagenesis and plasmid preps
  • Plate-based assays such as ELISAs and luciferase assays

NOTE: Position tasks are required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location; working remote is not an option.
