General Purpose: The Deli/Bakery Team Member is required to drive sales within the Bakery department while maintaining top tier customer service skills.
Work Schedule: Up to 40 hours per week, weekend work required. Overtime may be required.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Greet customers, respond to customer questions, requests, complaints and explain store policies in a courteous manner.
- Sell, select, wrap or package the products customers want to purchase.
- Write down customer’s special orders or requests.
- Prepare all baked goods daily and restock goods as they sell
- Understand the operation, safety requirements and restraints of a baler, case cutter, pallet jack, knife, intercom, pricing gun, slicer, fryer, yogurt machine, cash register, steam table, stove, smoker, scales and wrapper (must be 18 years or older to operate the pallet jack, baler, slicer, fryer, steam table, smoker and baler).
- Prepare and organize the cooler, freezer in preparation for receipt of merchandise, unload trucks, verify the merchandise against the invoice, inspect the delivery for shortages/damage and quality, sort cases for stocking or product preparation and code date the product.
- Clean department floors, mirrors, containers, cooler, shelves, slicer, product production area and shelves. Safely use cleaning equipment and chemicals.
- Load stocking carts and pallets, transport cases to sales floor, cooler, freezer, product preparation area either on stocking carts or pallets, open cases, place merchandise in the designated cooler, freezer, case, shelf, display area, check the product code or freshness date and face, front and rotate the front row of each display.
- Ensure safety of self, customers and co-workers by understanding and practicing store safety rules and notifying a Store Manager of any potential hazard immediately. Pick up or remove all broken containers, packing materials and boxes from the sales floor or product preparation area immediately.
- Count and record individual items of merchandise for inventory.
- Change department pricing as directed and manually price mark or label merchandise without a UPC code.
- Evaluate product quality and move damaged/unsalable and returnable products from case to the preparation area, reprocessing the merchandise into a salable form or marking the product down in price.
- Use the proper case opening and product stacking techniques to prevent damage to product.
- Remove trash from the aisle or product preparation area and operate the baler.
- Change signs, light bulbs, shelf signs/tags and price markers on the case or shelf display.
- Communicate with the Bakery Manager on problems, recommendation for change and merchandising ideas.
- Check case, cooler and freezer temperatures three times daily.
- Replenish supplies on the sales floor and in the product preparation area.
- Record out-of-stock conditions and the time they occur, report the Bakery Manager.
- Prepare, package and fill sales orders.
- Fill or stock display cases and counter.
- Perform any other miscellaneous tasks assigned by the Bakery and/or Store Manager
Required Education / Experience:
- Education and work history demonstrating stability
- 1+ years of bakery experience
- Ability to effectively communicate and establish working relationships with other departments and personnel.
- Basic mathematical skills required (add, subtract, multiply, and divide)
- Experience, understanding, and knowledge of operations in a food service business/industry
- Make judgments concerning: the placement of merchandise on the shelf or display, pricing, product quality standards, associate scheduling, order of product or supplies, hiring or supervision of associates, merchandising plans, departments’ operations policies and procedures and the sales and promotion of merchandise.
- Basic reading and writing ability; able to read instructions, merchandising labels, order codes, numbers, reports, printed paper invoices and order forms.
- Must be a self-starter who is able to demonstrate initiative in planning, work ethic, and make independent decisions based on sound judgment.
Physical Demands
- Work on tile or concrete standing for extended periods of time.
- Lift a maximum of 50 lbs. from 6 inches to 84 inches, overhead.
- Move cardboard into baler, if over 18 years of age.
- Move a maximum of 50 lbs. up to 15 yards.
- Use maintenance and product transportation equipment if properly trained
- Reach forward and/or down with both hands up to 36 inches to clean, obtain merchandise on stocking cart, multi tray rack or pallets, or shelves; as well as preparing and packaging product.
- Reach up to full extension of arms to place signs, banners or any other items required.
- Handle labels, signs or tags, case cutter or utility knife, grasp and handle wet, iced, cold, metal, paper, plastic products, cardboard, packaging and debris.
- Bend and Twist at the waist while cleaning, cutting or opening, sorting, loading and unloading, moving or removing merchandise and stocking merchandise.
- Move display fixtures, stocking carts, pallet jacks (up to 300 lbs.) and maintenance equipment approximately 25 yards.
- Climb on ladders, racks, cases, shelving and stairs up to three feet in height.
- Balance on wet, slick, dirty and debris strewn floors.’
