Successful applicants’ duties may include the following: field and/or laboratory and/or other assistance with research projects.
Assignments may require short turn-around time between issuance and completion of tasks with general or minimal supervision.
Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
Must be completely dependable and be able to work independently after training.
For some positions, the successful candidate must have some knowledge of laboratory procedures.
Successful applicants will work on an as needed basis during the academic year and/or summer for a faculty member or faculty members with active research projects.Duties:KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:Duties generally are routine in nature and decision-making is limited (e.g., may make routine decisions about assigned work in absence of immediate supervision.)May require some previous training, experience and/or knowledge.Good communication skills.TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:NoneREQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:Required experience varies:Student Assistant 1: Ability to work under general or intermittent supervision.
Duties are varied and require some independent judgment.
Some college level or comparable experience may be necessary.Student Assistant 2: Ability to work under general direction.
Duties require considerable knowledge and skills such as computer, research, or translation skills.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and decision-making.
Ability to assist faculty member with research, writing or assisting in writing technical reports; assisting in complex technical aspects of research projects.ALL LEVELS require attention to detail and timeliness in completion of assigned tasks.
Requires effective and timely communication skills.Minimum hourly rate varies:Student Assistant 1: $10.34 per hourStudent Assistant 2: $10.50 per hourTo be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:a.
Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; orb.
Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; andc.
Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee.d.
Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.e.

A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will requirethe withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load).
