Monthly Type: 11 Month Tenure Track: Tenure Full Time/Part Time: Full Time Temporary/Permanent: Permanent Other Conditions: This advertisement is for an 11-month, tenured / tenure-track vacant faculty position, to begin approximately July to September, 2019 for a physician-scientist with significant experience in laboratory research program in the area of cancer biology, biomarker or drug development.
The successful candidate will serve as leader (akin to Department Chair) of Translational Oncology and co-leader of the Cancer Biology program under the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant.
This position includes 80% protected time for basic or translational research, and will be expected to maintain some clinical activity or clinical translational research.
This position will be funded by appropriated funds; subsequent partial extramural funding is expected.
Continuation of appointment is contingent upon satisfactory performance.
The University of Hawaii (UH) Cancer Center conducts research on the causes, prevention, and treatment of cancer across a broad array of disciplines that includes oncology, epidemiology, molecular carcinogenesis, prevention methods, quality of life in cancer survivors and new therapeutic approaches to cancer treatment.
Associate Researcher Duties and Responsibilities: 1.
Perform professional and scientific research in the areas of basic cancer biology with a focus on bench to bedside translation.
This position will have a key role in advancing the center’s research mission with a focus on translational medicine and will have the opportunity to assume a leadership role in the Cancer Center as co-Program Leader for Cancer Biology.
2.
Recent history of or current history of independent line of investigation that is competitive for national peer-reviewed grants such as from the National Cancer Institute.
3.
Collaborate with faculty members of the UH Cancer Center, the Hawaii Cancer Consortium, other UH departments, and community-based health care providers on research projects, researcher training/mentoring, and other academic activities through innovative research and world-class cancer care.
4.
Seek collaborative research opportunities where Hawaii has an advantage due to its special multiethnic population with disparate outcomes and its unique flora and fauna as sources of anticancer compounds.
5.
May supervise postgraduate students (PhD or MS) and participate in graduate level teaching.
6.
Perform scholarly activities as assigned.
7.
Direct program recruitment efforts and serves as a mentor for junior faculty.
Researcher Duties and Responsibilities: 1.
Same duties and responsibilities as Associate Researcher but will require greater accountability for more complex projects.
2.
Serve as a role model within the UH Cancer Center, the UH, and in the national or international research, academic, and/or medical community.
3.
May assist in the administration of the center and with other related professional and scientific research endeavors.
Associate Researcher Minimum Qualifications: 1.
MD,DO, MD/PhD or equivalent degree, four years in the rank of Assistant Professor, or four years of othermedical experience, or a total of four years of teaching in the rank of Assistant Professor and other medical experience, or one year at the rank of Associate Professor at another medical school of recognized standing; 2.
Meets qualification for medical licensure in the State of Hawaii; 3.
Recognition for having made a significant scholarly contribution to the involved clinical specialty (for MD); 4.
Demonstrated research ability judged competent and adequate for the rank as compared with peers active in the same field at other major research universities; 5.
Demonstrated ability to plan and organize research activities; Demonstrated ability in teaching, research, and program administration; 6.
A strong research track record with active national peer-reviewed funding in cancer and/or clinical and translational research, with evidence of a sustained extramural funding base; 7.
Demonstrated ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues, and to effectively meet, interact and confer with others.
Researcher Minimum Qualifications: 1.
For MD, four years in the rank of Associate Professor, or ten years of other medical experience, or a total of ten years of teaching in the rank of Associate Professor and other medical experience, or one year at the rank of Professor at another medical school of recognized standing; 2.
Demonstrated research productivity which has resulted in significant recognition by the national or international community of scholars active in the same field; 3.
Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and/or supervise research activities; Demonstrated ability in teaching, research, and program administration; 4.
Demonstrated capacity for independent professional research as shown by participation in the affairs of regional and/or national research groups and/or societies; 5.
A strong research track record with active national peer-reviewed funding in cancer and/or clinical and translational research, with evidence of a sustained extramural funding base; 6.
Demonstrated ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues, and to effectively meet, interact and confer with others.
Desirable Qualifications: 1.
Experience with the conduct of cancer clinical trials; 2.
Experience in professional and scientific research field related to Cancer Biology.
