Responsibilities

The Strategic Weapon Systems group at Draper is seeking a Missile Avionics Senior System Engineer to work within multi-disciplinary teams to architect next-generation weapon system avionics/electronics solutions for the war fighter. This role will be of high interest to experienced system engineers who desire to participate in the conceptualization and development of new US military capabilities in strategic mission domains, which may include: global strike and/or strategic deterrent systems, hypersonic strike, missile defense systems, military space systems, and nuclear command, control, and communications (NC3).

Duties and responsibilities may include:

    Identification of customer mission needs and development of use cases;
  • Avionics requirement development, flow-down, and/or maintenance;
  • Avionics concept/architecture development, including analysis of alternatives;
  • System functional and dynamic modeling;
  • System design development, working with component designers;
  • Presentation of analysis results to both internal and external stake-holders;
  • Development of systems engineering, design, and analysis artifacts/documentation;
  • Supervision of junior engineers.

A successful candidate will be motivated to build deeper expertise in both the core mission domain(s), avionics technology, and model-based systems engineering methods. Working in a dynamic team environment developing state-of-the-art weapon systems will provide exposure to a wide range of advanced technologies as well as afford opportunities for increased leadership/impact on the development of new war-fighter capability.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Applicants must have the following key qualifications:

  • An M.S. degree or higher in engineering or physics;
  • 3+ years of professional experience in development of defense/space avionics;
  • Proficiency in systems engineering methods;
  • Prior specific experience in development of integrated hardware/software systems;
  • Working knowledge of DOORS and/or other requirements management tools;
  • Strong foundational knowledge of electronics and electronic component technology;
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to articulate complex technical ideas.

Preferred Qualifications: Any of the following additional qualifications are highly desirable:

  • 5+ years of professional experience in development of defense/space avionics;
  • Proficiency in System Modeling Language (SysML);
  • Experience with model-based engineering (MBE) frameworks/integrated model tools;
  • Practical experience with simulation-based performance analysis;
  • Knowledge of radiation environments and radiation effects on electronic components;
  • Foundational knowledge and/or practical experience specifically with guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) technology development.
